• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. Sako L579 308 Barrel markings questions

Hi,
Fairly new to the forum, only my second post. New to Sakos, so have a question. I picked up a Sako AII (seller said it was a Forester Sporter) with a serial number in the 85,000 range, 308 caliber. Told it was a pretty early gun, but not sure when it was made. Gun says L579 and has the serial and two other proof markings on the frame, but the only markings on the barrel are Cal 308 Winch, in script, there are no other markings. I find that odd. Barrel bluing matches receiver perfectly and I see no signs of tampering, but wondering if that is normal or if it was rebarreled. Gun is about 95% condition, very light rifle. Sako hard rubber buttplate.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

Matt welcome aboard - we would love to see pictures of your gun.
From your description you do not have an AII but instead you have an L579 or Forester. The barrel should have the caliber markings on the very top of the barrel where it meets the receiver. Also on the barrel left side just above the fore-arm you should see Forester Made in Finland stamped if not I am afraid you may have a
re-barreled action.

Thanks for the reply. No, like I said, only markings on the barrel are caliber in script on the left side. Must be rebarreled. Will see if I can get some photos on here.

Matt - yes definitely a re-barrel but that doesn't mean it is bad - shoot it and enjoy it but we would still love to see the pictures Thanks

No, great looking rifle, and so well done. Still working on the photos. I took it on trade to possibly resell. Wonder how much that would drop the reslae, by half? Try to get those pics soon.

Nicely done custom BBL rifle. Great pics. The action is from the late '60s. Factory stock with detachable sling studs added. Nice gun, and it should be accurate. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I have found out now who the original owner was, so I am going to try to talk to him to see how the gun shoots. Apparently was his hunting rifle for some time. I have little time for shooting and hunting these days with the young family, and already have one good bolt gun for the deer hunt, so will likely move this one along to a new home where it can get used once I figure out what it is roughly worth. Yes, I kind of thought those sling eyes were after the fact. It is a light, quick pointing rifle, would be a nice carry in the woods.
