I've done some reading but I would love some information on this L61r in 338 wm. It is in excellent condition and unfired. It has a 95xxx serial number.

You have a Deluxe model L61R. The Gracia import marking indicates it was made around or after 1972 & the serial number indicates it was made prior to the serial numbering change Sako did in 1974 that started with 500001. So a made on date of 1973 is as good a guess as any. The floorplate engraving is commonly called the "Sakolope" & is the most common pattern found on the Deluxe L61R's. It must have been stored horizontally, as most of these rifles have a crushed & deteriorated recoil pad from standing vertically in a safe. Unfired nearly 50 year old rifles are fairly scarce. Nice find!

Look like you have a really nice clean post 72 Deluxe Sako.

    Nice find!

This is an interesting "transition" model. It has the fixed sling swivels of the "pre-1972" stocks but the bolt torque pin of the Super 74. Sako is infamous for mixing and matching old and new parts, so this isn't all that surprising. Based on its having the circa 1974 bolt pin -- and the "pre-'74" stock and serial number -- I'd put it a year later than paulson's guess. But both are only educated guesses, so chances are about 50/50/50, meaning that there's a 50% chance that 1973 is right, a 50% chance that 1974 is right, and a 50% chance that neither year is right:confused::D.

Regardless of its exact date of manufacture (which is irrelevant to its value and usefulness) it is a beautiful big game rifle that deserves to have a big bear, moose, or African game placed in its sights.

Here's a twin, 25-06 with the bolt sleeve pin, See hang tag but how much does that help?

This is all very interesting, thank you to those that have been contributing!

gunner620: That is very neat that you have the tag that goes with it. '73 it would seem. Yours has a front sight and mine does not and I think your wood is nicer!

338, They just are not quite identical twins however they are closely related. Mine has no import mark as it was purchased in Germany, However it now has acquired citizenship and resides with me, Jim

I've helped several former European Sakos become naturalized U.S. citizens. It is very fulfilling to assist the "tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free". Once naturalized they all want to be fired on the 4th of July even though no hunting seasons are open!
