• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hi,

Ive located a L 461 222 Vixen that frankly has seen better days. The action is in superb condition retaining 95% + of its original finish but the barrel and particularly the stock will need serious attention. Im thinking of rebarreling the action to a Tactical 20 in the near future. My question is are the action, floor plate and trigger cut outs on the stock identical for both the L461 and 491 actions? Are they interchangeable as I have seen a 491 stock for sale and am wondering if this can be used to solve the stock issue?

Regards,

varminter

No, the S491 has a larger diameter action than the L461. However, a stock for an A-I action will be identical to the L461.

I think the 491 action is a bigger diameter than the L461, so it probably won't interchange without some major bedding work. Maybe someone with a 491 can measure it & check the bottom metal to see how close it is. If you are not concerned with cosmetics, it could probably be done. Unless your stock is broken or severely cracked refinishing it would probably be your best option. There are several stock makers (wood & synthetic) that inlet for the L461 & AI that would be another consideration.

If your looking for an original stock you will need to buy a L461 or A1, as Stonecreek said. Nothing about the 491 works and if you have the skill to make it work then you can probably fix your original stock. You'll need to hog out the guts and replace with a filler and re-inlet, not a project for the faint of heart and you won't like the results. Gunbroker has a lot of unfinished stocks, not original, for the L461 if you choose to go that way, again they are not for the weekend handyman. If you have the original stock, it has no cracks that can't be repaired, mainly cosmetic dents and dings, loss of finish, it can be fixed for a lot less than any of the alternatives. If it has been altered, ie someones wood chiseling project 101, and is not broken, I would sand it down, take a rattle can and prime it and paint it. You're going to rebarrel anyway so it would make a good hunting stock or even a stop gap until you can find an original. Originals, they do show up pretty regularly, good ones are usually in the 150-250 range. Here's a pic of a Gunbroker stock I did for my L461 in 223AI.
