• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Switch L579 bolt guide from internal spring to pinned (guide)

I am one of those people who broke my bolt guide retaining spring (the little sort of cross-shaped leaf spring). I've since found one and can use it to reassemble the bolt guide after I get the rifle parts treated with the black nitride process. I am thinking that having the guide drilled for a cross-pin would be better than using the spring (as mentioned in another post). I have a machinist friend who can drill the hole and make a pin for it. Drill rod or other suitable pin material is way cheaper than the springs made of unobtainium.

So, I'm seeking the memberships' thoughts on the advisability of doing this and then maybe pass along the spring to someone who needs it.

Thats a solution to the problem which I feel is superior as the older rifle bolt guides used a pin. Just make sure he can drill the guide accurately. Numrich gun parts used to have the pin, not sure if they still have them. If they don't I have a pin I can measure for you.
 
It seems that you may be looking for a solution to a nonexistent problem.
Just correctly reassemble the parts.......and be done with it.
JMHO.......

BTW.........there's an old thread over on the accuratereloading site about a slick method of disassembly. I may have posted about it before.

I'm going to see what my machinist friend says about drilling the guide for a crosspin after I drag all the parts up to his shop (we're overdue for a visit anyway) or default to using my new spring after the black nitriding is complete (the spring won't be included). I'm hoping that treatment will make the action cycle almost as smoothly as a Krag and make the all the parts look (nearly) like they've been rust blued to a satin/matte finish.

I don't intend to try it, but wonder whether the black nitride treatment would make it difficult or impossible (because of the increased surface hardness) to drill the guide for the crosspin hole? Would a carbide drill bit be used to get through the surface hardness?

Drill the guide for the cross pin first. That was easy....
