Great condition minus the squished recoil pad. Was that way when I bought it several years back. Bofors Steel markings on the barrel. Anyone have a ballpark figure? Thanks!

When I first started collecting Sako's, I was told the .223 Deluxe with Bofors markings were very rare. Yours is the first one I have seen. Priceless.

The engraving pattern on the floorplate appears to be from a somewhat later model, the A-I. Are you aware of if/when it might have been changed out?

It has not been changed out that I am aware of. The gentlemen I bought it from had it for many years and had done nothing to it but store it in his safe.

A rifle from before 1968 & bottom metal from after 1978 does raise some questions, but the answer is probably lost to time. Very nice rifle, BTW!!!!

This is very interesting. Is the trigger guard correct or has that been swapped also?
    Makes me wonder why? Haha...

I went down to the safe and dug out a couple of older Sako Deluxes, one in 222 Rem mag and the other in a 223. The 222 mag is a pre-Garcia Bofors gun the 223 is a Garcia deluxe. As you can see, the Garcia deluxe has the Fox on the floorplate and the 222 mag has the pinecones...

Also notice the difference in the magazine release and that the later one has a rounded floorplate tang (hinge piece) whereas the older one will have a square tang end, even though it doesn't show in this photo.

Kirk, is the Garcia marked "L461" or "AI"? I've only seen the stylized fox on A-I's, but it certainly could have appeared on late L461's.

There are lots of Sakos floating around which, for one reason or another (usually a broken stock or damaged part), have had components from other Sakos used as replacements. You can find out the original configuration, caliber, and date of manufacture of your rifle by ordering information from the Club's factory records service. Click the link near the top of each page on the forum.

It is L461, AI is a Stoeger era designation...

I too have a L461 Vixen Deluxe in .223 with Oak leaves and acorn engraving that is Bofors marked. It’s in really nice condition. How rare are we talking?

Not long ago I sold a 223 pre Garcia Deluxe in excellent like new condition for $2000. It had the Fox floor plate but did not have the Bofors barrel stamp.

From what I see of you photo's it looks like it might be in excellent condition also, if so it would be worth North of $2000.00

Bofors stamped 223 Deluxe is a hard find!

Here is a pre-Garcia "Bofors" 223 deluxe. I am told these are really scarce...

That is certainly true, but just how scarce is hard to say. Prior to about 1968 Sako simply listed all rifles of the same caliber together in their shipping records, so it is impossible to know how many were "standard", HB, Deluxe, or Mannlicher. We can only tell from the records how many of each caliber were produced and shipped. In 1964, the first year of production for the Sako .223 (although Sako had made this caliber for Colt for a couple of years previous), there were 189 caliber .223 L461's produced. Mysteriously, this fell to only 8 for 1965. 1966 = 595, 1967 = 469, and 1968 (the last year in which the Bofors mark was generally placed on barrels) = 425. So the total potential number of Sako .223's with the Bofors mark is 1,606. (Some 1968 production lacked the mark and some later production had it, so it is impossible to know the exact number.)

Sixteen Hundred rifles scattered around the world in four different configurations doesn't leave all that many as Deluxes. My best guess is that about 10% of all the production might have been Deluxes, meaning there would be something on the order of 160, or between 100 and 200 Deluxe .223's with the Bofors mark. The number of Mannlichers is probably similar.

By the way, I'm puzzled why Sako produced so relatively few .223's in the earlier years. Contrast the 425 .223's of all types made in 1968 with the number of .222's made that year:

    910 Standard Sporters
    101 Deluxe Sporters
    62 Mannlichers 24"
    50 Mannlichers 20"
    97 Heavy Barrel
    30 Sporter barreled actions
    30 Heavy barreled actions

1327 total .222's (Deluxes representing 7.6% of the total)

No wonder it took me so long to find a Deluxe 223 for my collection. I knew I had the bar set high when I was looking for Deluxes, and your production numbers for the 223 confirm it. I wouldn't buy a Deluxe unless it was bofors marked, "S" shaped release, square tang, better than 95% condition, and an original like new recoil pad. The 22-250 Deluxe with my requirements was equally difficult to find. And I still haven't found a 375 Deluxe.
