• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Is there anything special about a Sako L579 that has checkering on the top rear flat spot of the bolt, or are they all like this?

wmumma,
While you are waiting for an informed answer you might check some of the pictures in the "Show us your beautiful Sako's" thread. Just an idea.

Hey wmumma,
Checkering on the rear flat top of the bolt was par-for-the-course on pre-model 72 sako's as well as on the Model 74. Serial number will help here to determine the approximate year of manufacture.
Regards, Will

Serial # is 648** for my L579. I believe it was built late 66- early 67. I was told that the checkering was something special, I didn't think it was.

You'll find three versions of finish on the top of the bolt shroud. The most common is the one you have which is checkered (the factory calls this "knurled") like the flats of the dovetail on top of the action. This was found on nearly all L579s except the Model 72, a short-lived variation which had smooth dovetail flats and bolt shroud tops. A few very early L579s had longitudinal grooves decorating the top of the bolt shroud. These are limited to just the very earliest production runs.

So, your version is far from rare. But you didn't say "rare", you said "special" -- and you're right -- all Sakos are SPECIAL!
