• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hi again.

Still assisting my friend.

I found out that my friends rifle is most likely L46, L469, P54 or L61R. It has a heavy barrel. He sent me a couple of photos.

This rifle has been in his family for some 40+ years.

Can anyone give us some more information about this rifle, if it is a collectors item or how much it might be worth? He has offered it for sale here in Iceland but he got the feeling that those bidding (very low) knew something he didnt.

Best regards

Halli

Halli,

This is definately an L46, and the heavy barrel configuration is somewhat less common than the sporter. The photos are not detailed, but from what I can tell it has very nice wood and looks to be in very good condition. Other than missing its front sight hood (very common with Sakos), it appears fully original -- even the scope mounts are original Sako mounts.

Ten-to-one it is a .222, but please do tell us the caliber. Even if it is a .222, $1,000 should be the starting point.

So you are in Iceland? Tell your friend that when he sells, put the money in his matress rather than in the bank

Thank you blackjack and stonecreek
I really dont know much about guns. But it is marked with .222. Well I am learning fast these days and getting more interested. I really think I might become a proud rifle owner one day.

I would like to keep it and shoot it like you suggest but I am just assisting my friend who is not good on computers. He has 9 firearms includeing this Sako, rifles and shotguns, all pretty old. And he says they can all still be used(shot with) except for one he dose not trust but that is not the Sako.

He was in this sport when he was younger and inherited most of his weapons. He has his reasons for wanting to sell his collection and is now working on it. And yes, we use all our KRONAS to buy forreign currency end put it into our matresses, hehe. Many of us are saveing up to move abroad.

If any of you guys are interested I can get you more photos and eaven a valuation of its condition from a gunsmith here in Iceland. But I know nothing about selling guns over borders, but I can get you in contact with the owner and continue to assist him in internet communication.

Best regards
Halli

Halli - I think the general consensus here is that unless a weapon's value is very very high, the time and expense involved in import/export misery is not worth it for most individuals.

While I'm not real familiar with your country's economic situation, I do know it's been kind of like a runaway train. While we can give you an estimate of what it might be worth here, it likely is a bit different there. It may be that having money in tangable assets like firearms might be viewed as a decent 'investment' strategy there - maybe not. Like real estate, the ultimate value is what a seller and a buyer are willing to agree on. Without the ability to cross borders in marketing, your friend is operating in a closed system.

Good luck, Dick

Halli:

Importing a gun into the U.S. is somewhat expensive and something of a pain. My guess is that it is much easier for you to export to one or more of the E.U. countries. There are quite a few members here on the Sako forum who are in Europe (our founder, Jim, is in Sweden). Perhaps one of them may be interested. I'll assure you, if it were practical to import to the U.S., there would be several of us lined up to bid on your friend's gun!

If you would like, I can post a link to this discussion on a European hunting forum. Just let me know. But I would advise that if you ever want to get into shooting, don't let your friend's gun get away! You should buy it yourself. It is next to impossible to find a gun of its quality today at any price.

Halli,
Be careful. When you jump from one runaway train to another it can be tricky. If you are in a position to buy the rifle for future use, it just may be worth your while.

I get your point and thank you for your warning. It is of course never wise to jump a round just because things get rough, but....

Lets say you are on a runaway train on fire and you are able to jump to another that is out of control but still not burning. Thats more like the situation here.

But regarding that beautiful rifle. I want to thank you all for your assistance. We know a lot more about it because of you guys.

Best wishes to all of you

Halli

Halli,
Good points - if one knows the difference :bigsmile3: Thanks. And good luck to you on your efforts for your friend. That's a nice thing to do.
Best,
S-A
