• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Just purchased a Sako Riihimaki mannlicher that is missing its front sight hood, are these available anywhere and can New England Firearms new hoods be used instead.

Missing sight hoods are about the most common deficiency in older Sakos (they were relatively easy to pull off by catching on brush, or even snag on the lining of a gun case.) I've never found a source of replacement, other than to watch for them on ebay. If anyone knows of a source, I'm in the market for several.

Without a doubt, the hardest part find for our rifles. There is no source for them. After talking to lots of guys about scopes with open sights, surprisingly, a lot of guys pull off hoods and front site assemblies in their entirety because they think that it will interfere with the scopes sight picture. Anybody else heard of this?

DeerGoose-

Funny you mention- I just mounted a scope on a Battue and pulled off the raised rib but left on the front sight and hood. The hood is picked up as a light shadow, but it is really no big deal; the focus should be on the target anyway. I was using the old Sako medium rings with the 3/4 caps.

BTW, anybody know what size the Sako sight plug screws are? Thanks.

Dave

The front sight hood is slightly visible (and perhaps bothersome) with very low power scopes, or variables set to 3x or so. At powers greater than about 4x, the sight hood tends to fade away and is completely invisible with most 6x-plus magnifications. If the sight hood is visible at higher powers, then the focus of the scope is out of kilter.

Just one more reason to pay a premium for a Deluxe.

No sight or hood to bother with.

Well, for us that like to shoot with the peep.....taking off the cover is idiodic. I love shooting with iron sights and I'm 61 years old. Regards , Rick.

Yogsson- Unusual is the best term for this condition. It was an option "way back when". I have seen quite a few of them that are sighted in front but I only own one deluxe with the front sight and peep option. I also tend to believe that the vixens had this set up more often due to target shooting popularity.- Best- Mike

My Sako 243 Forester with the Borfos barrel has the hooded front sight. I have a Unertl Ulrta Varmit with the calibrated head with fine double horizontal crosshairs and the Lee dot and I don't have any trouble leaving the hood on. The scope is 15 power. I have had the gun since 1966, it is a 1961. The scope I bought new in 1966 and still have the original wooden box and packing it came in. The whole setup is in excellent condition. I am considering selling it and I no longer use it. We have lived in Florida for 30yrs. and there arn't any wood chucks here, wish there was. If you know of anyone interested my email is [email protected]. Thanks.
