• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I just purchased a Sako Forester .243 and have several questions. I'm new to to Sako world and was originally helped out in my purchase in this thread. Thanks for the help.

The sn# is 167XX. What year was it manufactured?. What is the barrel twist? Who's bore guide do you recommend? Any other info you may find relevant about this rifle would also be appreciated.

Is this the Deluxe you spoke of before? If so Congrat's ! I have one #151XX that was thought to be from 1962, its a sporter , not as fancy as yours. Not sure about the twist rate, but some one will be along soon with that info. Or you can search for the answer with keywords from past threds! This sight is Great!

Congratulations on a great buy! I own a Deluxe .243 that is near yours in the manufacturing sequence which does a great job of taking whitetails and hogs and looks good doing it.

As to year of manufacture, the preceeding L57 used serial numbers running up through the mid-10,000's and was produced from 1957-1959, at which point Sako switched over to the successor L579 and continued the SN sequence. Since yours is approximately 6,000 into the L579 run, I would guess it to be late 1960 or 1961, but considering how Sako would sometimes skip around by finishing rifles on actions out of sequence, it might have left the factory as late as 1962.

No doubt you'll enjoy owning and shooting it.

Twist rate for the 243 Win is 1 in 10 and will stabilize bullets up to 105 grains. I have heard of people having trouble stabilizing some of the new nonlead bullets in the heavier weights because of their longer length. With a serial number in the 16,000's, your rifle was made in the early 60's. Without a hang tag or specific factory data it is hard to pin down the exact date. Sako didn't always make rifles in sequence with the serial numbers, so their date of manufacture is an approximation most of the time. The first L579 was serial # 10091 on Jan. 29,1960. Serial # 118961 was made on Feb. 15, 1973. They then went to a special numbering system from #1 to #310. A numbering change started in 1974 with # 300001 and ended in 1991 with # 385127. They then started a common numbering designation with # 800316 until the model was discontinued on April 1, 1992 with # 821799. Stamp change to the "A" designation was started with serial # 327116 in the late 70's. Nice rifle!

That's great you were able to get it even when already spoken for. I's always good to express your interest since sometimes people have second thoughts about spending their money. Especially after the wife gets wind of it:wink2:. BTW, I'm with with bloorooster. But, I would go $200 more than you paid for it.

for the help to those who repsponded. I am quite tickled with my new
purchase and will be holding on to it for a while. I plan on using it for
deer and hog hunting and shooting for fun. It is certainly the best
looking hunting rifle i own. Isn't that tree inlay on the bottom if the
grip cool.

This afternoon I was helping a friend sight in several of his Sakos. He has a standard grade .243 about the age of your deluxe. It was the least demanding and most instantly gratifying in terms of accuracy of any of the guns we shot. Seemed it would shoot a 3/4" group with anything he put in it.

Incidentally, he had a .308 Deluxe that was almost identical to your .243. It didn't seem to want to behave properly, so I examined his handloads. It seems he had inadvertantly allowed his new seater die's crimp bevel to hit the case mouths and slightly bulge the necks (Hint: Never, ever seat and crimp in one operation with a conventional seating die. It will screw up your reload big time.) We substituted some of my .308 loads for my similar Sako and the gun immediately settled down to put five shots under a quarter.
