• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I traded for an L61 Mannlicher 7mm Mag back in December and was finally able to shoot it last evening. I mounted a Leupold VX III 3.5-10x 50mm scope on it so I decided to sight it in and see how she would shoot. I have found that my SAKOs like plain old Federal Powerpoint ammunition so was using a 150 gr bullet. After shooting about 6 rounds to get the point of impact adjusted to where I wanted, I started shooting 3 shot strings. This is an amazingly accurate rifle. At 100 yards, this rifle shoots consistent 1/2 inch groups. I will be visitng my son this weekend and he has loaded some 130 grain moly coated Winchester Silver Tips for me to try out. The ammunition thing is kind of weird. I have tried factory Remingtons in my SAKO AII and AIII .270 and .243 Mannlichers and they have not shot consistently. Switched to Federals and life is good. Anyone out there have any good loads for these calibers?

sakoman,
Welcome to the forum. A lot of folks like the 7 mm Rem Mag. I have them myself. It seems that every rifle has a "sweet spot" as far as ammo is concerned. Some like hand loads the most and others click right along with factory ammo. I'm sure there is a mystique for that secret formula for one who hand loads. If you get where you need to go with OTC ammo, then that's a good thing.
I'm sure you will hear some opinions about the Mannlichers and loads from some of the best hand loaders around here on the forum. BTW, I am going to move your post to the "General" section as this is not related to Conditions of Membership. You'll get used to where to post as time goes on. No problem.
Nice to have you on board.

Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to using this site and getting to know the other SAKO owners out there.

Hey Sakoman,
I also have the L61R Mannlicher in 7mm Mag as well as the Sporter in 7mm Mag. Both SN 64XXX. The Mannlicher long actions were only made for approx. one year in 1971. I have received other info that only 194 (if I remember correctly) were made in 7mm Mag. I don't know the condition of your rifle but if it is like mine in the 98-99% range, I would find another rifle to shoot. However, when I bought mine a few years ago, it came with an early 1980's Burris 3 X 9, and like all "used" rifles I purchase, I take them to the range to make sure they function. I don't re-load anymore, yet I found my Mannlicher loves Hornady Custom 162 Grain BTSP InterLocks.

Will:

Thanks for the comments. I know I shouldn't shoot it, but I can't help myself. It doesn't help that I have a range in my backyard. I orginally had a Sporter L61R in 7mm that I purchased about a year ago. My son knowing that I love the Mannlichers had found one and traded me his 7mm Mannlicher for my Sporter. Both rifles are super accurate. He reloads so has been working up some good loads. I'll have him load me up some of the Hornady 162s. Will be visiting him this weekend so am taking both my 7mm and .270 to try out some of his new loads. The one rifle that I have had difficulty in getting consistent groups with is my AIII .243 Mannlicher. It is the prettiest looking rifle I have ever owned. The wood is awesome, yet I don't trust it to take it hunting. It will shoot 1/2 " groups then a couple of strings later, it will be all over the target. I have swapped out scopes going from a Nikon to a Burris with the same results. My objective for the summer is to get this worked through.trying to find the ammunition for it that is the most compatible.
