• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Did the H&R 317 have the tapered dovetail and would a set of older Redfield one-piece ringmounts designed for one fit the tapered dovetail on the Sako 75 III action? And I'll ask the same question about the Browning rifles Sako made. Thank you.

mm6ppc-All I know is of what I have seen. The 317 had Sako actions and dovetails.- The mauser actioned ones were roundtops.-Misako

Yes, Bill- The H&Rs woulda or shoulda had round tops like the Browning Sakos but the ones I have looked at had dovetails if they had sako actions.-Mike

I believe the 317 came in both round top and dove tail depending on how early or late the rifle was made. My 317 is a dove tail action but I know from a conversation with Kenny G (our resident H&R expert) that the 317 did come in a round top.

mm6ppc-Sorry. we got so involved with the 317 and failed to answer you question about the ringmount. I don't think a one piece that will fit a 317 H&R will fit a 75 lll. The 75 lll is a little too long. A two piece will work.-Misako

Sorry guys I had to delete your posts. We are too far off topic and this is makemine6ppc's topic- Misako

Bill- I haven't, but then I just get to see sorts of hodgepodge examples of proprietary Sako "art" here, where I live. Mostly from the range at my club. Too bad the little brownings had wood problems in some year classes. They are a superlative example of the era's craftsmanship. -Mike

I've located a NIB pair of Redfield ring-mounts for an H&R 317. These mounts would do away with the need for a base and a ring (I used the wrong term when I described it as a one piece because there are two ring-mounts). They also had a set for a Browning/Sako 243, 308, 22-250 length action. They look like a very nicely made piece of gear. So it sounds like these will work for a 75. Thank you guys.

Alan- If they require drilling holes in your rifle, they are not correct for it if you have the dovetails. A simple set of leupolds or millets (not to mention the vintage sakos) will work well with both of the dovetailed rifles.-Misako

Misako, these are made to fit a dovetailed receiver and I wasn't sure if the H&R's had the same size dovetail set-up used on the newer rifles. Thanks for all the advice. Alan

FWIW.....The H&R 317 had a dove-tailed L461 receiver, for the years 1968 thru 1974. In 1975 and 1976, the L461 receivers were round-top, drilled and tapped.

BTW.....The only one piece Redfield ringmount set that I've seen, was for the round-top L461, and was aluminum. I think it was from Redfield's "Frontier" line of mounts/rings.

Redfield made a steel bridge-mount for the round-top L461, and round-top L579.

Just my opinion, but if the dove-tailed ringmount is aluminum, I wouldn't use it on a Sako 75 III action........not to mention anchoring it with a vertical steel set-screw.

Just my thoughts.....and $0.02.
