• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hello fello Sako affectionatos. I posted some pics of my old .308 in the appropriate section, I hope, of the group photos page. The background of this rifle is largely unknown, however, thanks to Jim Lutes and others, we kind of have a decent idea about the history of this rifle. She is a transition piece for lack of a better word. When Sako stopped producing the L57 and started the 579 line, they had a number of funtional parts left over. They, being frugal Scandihoovians, used up some of the old 57 parts on the 579 line. I came about this rifle by pure luck having purchased it from a dealer on GA who was clueless. He had no pics of the rifle and said it was really nice and that it had a flat bottomed bolt. I called Jim and he told me to beware as the flat bottomed bolt was discontinued with the 579 version. I bought it anyway sight unseen....too cheap to pass kind of a thing. When I opened the box .... well, I was in awe. Go look at the pictures and let me know what you think. God I love these guns!

Rick,

Thanks for sharing the pictures! I don't collect the older rifles, but it is a very interesting and certainly rare Sako you have.

congrats, Rick!!. You've found a great rifle in a rare configuration. Did Jim date the rifle for you, 1959 or 1960? The metal and stock checkering is unique, the sight hood is correct and I noticed that the stock doesn't have the recoil lug (crossbolt). Most of the L579 .308s did. If you look closely at the buttplate, there should be OY and AB stradling the "S". ?? I have a question: How is the model identified? Does it say "Forester Made in Finland" or just "Forester" ? Also, the floorplate looks like a leftover L57 floorplate, which flares out slightly more than the L579 plates. I'll have to dig out one of my rifles to compare.

Looks all Sako factory original to me, and a real gem !

Hello DeerGoose. I think you are correct on the floorplate it looks like an L57. The cogs above the S spell SAKO and the cog under the S has a tiny OY and under the O is AB. I posted a picture of the model identification....FORESTER followed by smaller type MADE IN FINLAND all letters in upper case. I'm still amazed at how a rifle this old could have survived in such pristine condition and never been fired. Other than a few light handling marks and a litttle scrape in front of the front site...it's like new. Jim thought it was a 1959 model off the top of his head. I own an unfired ASNIB .243 Mannlicher 1966? vintage that was my pride and joy that has been demoted in the ranks. I took a big chance on this rifle and I think my collection is now complete. Another unusual feature other than the lack of the lug is the weight...It's very light...feels as light as a feather. One of these days I'll weigh it and let you know. Many thanks for your help......regards, Rick.
