• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I just bought a 30.06 L61R with a Leopold 3x9 Vari-XII c scope with the serial # 41*** for $700 in excellent condition does anyone know what year this might have been produced and did I get a good deal? It is a Finnbear made in Finland. I am not very familiar with Seko firearms but have wanted a larger caliber deer rifle for a while and my friends dad was selling it.

At 700 and in excellent condition yu got a very good if not great deal. The right rings are worth upwards of 100 the scope is worth 175-200 and so you got a sako for 400 to 500. even if the scope is worth nothing you got it for about 650.I will buy as many pre-Garcias that i can get my hands on for 650.
My guess it was made either late 69 or early 70

Going through this site I have seen "Garcia" what is that refering to? You mentioned pre-Garcia. I would appreciate you educating me on this gun.

Up until 1972 Firearms international imported the sako firearms into the United states and Canada after that the Garcia corporation took over and made changes that some feel cheapened Sakos. hence the term pre-garcia with the serial # you gave yours was made about 1970 you can look for the import stamp at the very front of the stock on the underside of the barrel.although I do not think it is that uncommon to find a pre-garcia with out an import stamp.I have read here that the import stamp can be found on the underside of the barrel under the stock.i have 5 well some would argue 4 pre-garcia rifles and but only one has an import stamp.

"Manshack" Girl:

You got an excellent buy. It is also equipped with an excellent scope. Your rifle may have the "Bofors Steel" stamp on the right-hand side of the barrel just forward of the action. Although there is no real difference in the barrels, those with this stamp are more sought-after than those without.

Your rifle will have a more slender and refined contour to both the stock and barrel than those made just a few years later, making it perhaps a half-pound lighter. This is one reason that I greatly prefer the "pre-Garcia" Sakos.

For deer hunting here in Central Texas use any of the standard (not "premium") 150 grain loads that you can pick up at Academy or Walmart. Most will perform similarly and provide more than ample power. However, once you have sighted in with a particular brand and lot of ammunition, don't randomly change to another as your zero will likely change slightly.

Your .30-06 not only makes a fine deer rifle, but is adequate for the largest North American game. My son has a Sako .30-06 that I bought for him when he was a teenager. He has killed most of the game species up through elk in this country with it, as well as kudu, oryx, zebra, warthog and others in Africa.

Hang onto that rifle -- you'll never need anything else unless you just want it. I live nearby, so drop me a line if you need any help with your Sako.

  1. Well it does have a stamp of some kind, a M with a extra line and a kind of crown looking deal but it is on just to left of the bolt and right on top in front of the bolt with the caliber right beside it.
  2. Thank you so much for the info Scott, I feel I have made a very good investment!!

HA Manshack you must be near!! Well thankyou so much for the information, I did find a stamp of some kind just to the left of the bolt, a M with a extra line and a crown looking stamp right beside it. It also is right in front of the bolt with the caliber right beside it. After talking to yall I feel I have made a very wise investment.

Could you please tell me the interest in the "rings". I have gone through this message board and that seems to be a bit of interest. Are they talking about the rings for the scope and why are they so important? I am just a South Austin deer hunter and this site has got me asking myself alot of questions about firearms. I currently shoot a .257 Roberts Ruger M77 and have for about 20 years until this dropped in my lap and finding this site has been quite a eye opener.

In regard to the mounting rings, I think that the poster was simply pointing out that if you were assembling the rifle and scope today you would be paying around $300 for the scope and mounts, meaning that your net cost for the gun itself is only about $400 -- a true bargain.

A couple of other things I might point out about your "pre-Garcia" L61R: If you will withdraw the bolt you will find a "third" or "safety" locking lug just forward of the bolt handle. This was missing from later L61R actions. You will also find (if they have not been replaced) that your sling swivels are fixed rather than being a stud for the quick-detachable type swivels.

The Sling posts must have been replaced, I just put some 'Quick" strap deals on yesterday. I will look at the bolt at lunch.
Thanks again for all your info!!!
