• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hey everyone, I recently purchased a pretty nice Sako L579 in 6mm rem. I really don't know much about the gun and it is hard to find any info online. Its my first Sako and am really excited to learn more about it. It also has a crowned barrel as well.

Thanks

Sako sold actions, in the white, back in the day. Brownell's used to sell them through the mail & a lot of gunsmiths built custom rifles with them. From the stock style & features I would say yours was built in the 1960's & the stock could be a Fajen, Bishop, or Herter's. Regardless it appears to be a nicely done custom & you would be hard pressed to buy better quality off the shelf in today's world. If you take the barreled action out of the stock you may find the barrel & stock makers name & maybe even the gunsmith who built it scribed or stamped somewhere. Let us know how it shoots, as the 6mm Rem is a fine round. There are plenty of pics here of factory L579s for you to compare. BTW, all barrels have a crown, they just aren't all the same type of crown.

I agree with everything Paulson says.

Just a note: Early on, Sako actions came already blued. I think it was around the time that the action designations were changed from "L" to "A" that they started coming in the white. Gunsmiths probably preferred them in the white since it would be much easier to match the blue of the barrel.

I still have two of them, both blued, Garcia marked, in the original boxes. Interestingly, one has the "safety" lug and one does not. As best I remember, I got them when Gander Mountain went out of the custom gun business. A couple of years ago I was talking to a local barrel specialist about making me a barrel in 6.5-06 for one of them, but he seems to have gone out out of business. I do have one pretty nice Fajen semi-finished stock, so one of these days...
