• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Airgopapa,
I just joined today and am going through all the messages to get brought up to speed on whatever. I just closed the deal on a 17 Rem in a S491 varmint. Should have it in a week I'd guess. Had Sakos for along time but my first 17. Would appreciate knowing what you got going with yours, loads, accuracy, problems, challenges etc.

Hi just found your site yesterday. I am a Sako Finnbear owner. It is a deluxe 7mm rem mag. s/n 577xx, sitting atop it is a Weatherby Priemer 3x9x40 scope. Condition is 95%(minor stock blemishes). I have been searching for information for over a year, currently I believe it is a late 60's manufactured rifle. Also pre-garcia vintage. Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks mic

New member seeks help identifying rifle.

A friend has inherited a Forester L579 s/n 207xx. It is marked Bofors on the side of the barrel and has a checkered hardwood stock. There is some wear of the blueing around the bolt but it has been very well cared for. I have not determined the calibre. Can anybody point me to a serial number guide or other info to pin down what this is. Thanks.

The caliber should be on the top of the barrel at the receiver. Your gun sounds as if it is a sporter and was made in the early '60s. Definately a pre-'72 gun. Have fun.

Just thought I would introduce myself as I have just joined the Forum.
I am a school teacher from Coffs Harbour, NSW Australia and have had a long interest in Sakos. Ever since I handled my first L461 back in the 1960's I have been a keen Sako fan.
I currently own a Sako L 46 (25/20); Sako L461 Thumbhole (222); Sako 75 Varmint HB (223); Sako Finnlite 75 (243); Tikka T3 Varmint (308). I am on to a Sako L61R in 25/06 ... it's in a deceased estate and I hope to get the nod from the widow. I am also about to gain a Sako 22LR HB in the next week or so.
I hope that i wil be able to learn much more about the history of these magnificent riflrs via this forum. Thank you.

Hello Sakocoffs. Nice collection. Good luck with the widow. I googled Coffs Harbour. Bananna plantatons, whale watching, agriculture, mountains, hunting, fishing and it is on the best beaches in Australia. That's the good news. The bad news is, with all the aforementioned things to do and widows with Sako's some of us might like to visit you. :-)

G'day Sakocoffs, nice to here from another Sako aficionado here in Oz. I agree with Mod.70Hunter - nice collection, especially the L46. Been looking for a good one in 7x33 for a couple of years now, have only come accross one VERY WELL USED example so far. Any leeds ? !!!

Also agree about the NSW coast, I'm a little further south than you - but hey....

Welcome to the Club.

Hello from Washington State.

I am a new member and have owned a L61R since I graduated from high school in 1976. That year my dad traded me his 1971 7mm Finnbear for a beat up Model 70 Winchester which he rebarreled to .338 for his elk rifle. That .338 he put together could shoot like nobodys business, but the Sako was and still is the best shooting hunting rifle I have ever used, and I have shot a few. We also owned a sweet little Vixen in .222 which was stolen years ago, what a loss that was. It was also a pre-Garcia model.

I would guestimate that I have shot close to 40 deer and 12 elk with the 7mm, what a sweet rifle to pack. It's pretty beat up, but in real good mechanical condition and the bore is still good, it just has a lot of miles on it so the finish is worn and the blueing is in sad shape. Have you ever noticed have quickly the acids in blood will eat up blueing, give it some thought.

I recently purchased a circa 1974 Finnbear in .338 for Elk as my son will sooner or later need to upgrade to my 7mm from his Model 700, but it's still a little to early in his hunting career to "Pass the torch". Besides, I still need the 7mm for a back up when I hunt in Idaho and Montana, as I gave my dads .338 to my brother for a keepsake when my dad died.

I just sent a 2X7 Leupold Vari XII to T.K. Lee for a 6' dot which I will put on the new Sako .338. The problem is this, I need medium height Sako mounts and would like to use the which would be identical to the 7mm in looks and be interchangeable should I ever have problems while in the field. I have the Peep Site and keep that in my daypack for emergencies, which once happened in 1985.

Where can a purchase Sako mounts or trade my low mount for medium? I have checked E-bay, Craigs List and the various Gun Broker sites to no avail. With this new .338 in hand, an Idaho elk tag, the scope being done by Lee and hunting season 7 weeks away, I'm pumped.

I would hate to put Leupold mounts on the .338 as I really am fond of the Sako system.

Thanks in advance for your interest in Sakos and your help.

Later,

Rob

Welcome to the club, Rob- Glad you could make the trip. There isn't a two week period when there isn't a decent set of medium vintage sako rings on Ebay. Looks like your time line is getting a bit snugg, however. You could opt for an inexpensive set of the newer Leupold Sako mts. and then take your time finding the right set of vintage sakos. The Leupolds are great mounts for a Sako as they stand, but I understand where you are coming from. Who knows--- someone on here may have an extra set they can't fill. Wouldn't be the first time thats happened. Best- Mike

Misako, thanks for the lead on Ebay, I will keep my eyes open. If I get desperate I will get the Leupold mounts, but you kow how the Sako thing is

.

I won't get my scope back from T.K. Lee for a few weeks as is so there is no reason to panic. I can get the whole thing mounted and sighted in a few days time. I will probably start with the same reloading data that we used on the old .338 and +/_ a few tenths of a grain to work up a game load. Its a .338, as long as I get 1.5" at a hundred I'm happy.

Do you have any experience with the Lee dot reticle? I have used the one my dad had on his a few times and I love it for a quick shot. The higher your turn the power, the smaller it gets for more precie shooting. It's also a fairly accurate rangefinder in a pinch.

I'm in the Puget Sound Region, where are you from if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks,

Rob.

I am in Nebraska, Rob. I would rather be in Wyoming or Montana but this is where I am planted for now and in the future I'm afraid.

Mike, first off, what's a "Sako Flower"?

Second, Nebraska has some big whitetails from what I hear. We used to have pretty good elk and deer hunting in Washington, but with all the influx of people, the mismanagement of game, the stop on logging in the National Forests and the poaching, things have gotten pretty tough. We still get game regularly, at least deer, but elk really take a LOT of work. I am fortunate to work as a surveyor contracting for the timber companies, BLM and Forest Service, so I get to put a lot of time in scouting while on the job. I get a bull about once every 3 years hunting within a couple hours of my house, but I put in the time like you would not believe. I also hunt Idaho, the season starts the 10th of October, and Montana every other year, at least that's how the draw works out for us.

We do well in Idaho, I get a decent bull every other year and sometimes back to back, but Montana has not been very gracious, 1 nice bull in 4 trips hunting the Bitterroots, but we always get nice Muley bucks east of Great Falls.

My wife is super cool which is a huge plus. Like you, I am planted here for good as I am self employed and will not be able to retire for 20 years which will put me at 70, which is fine because I don't golf.

I love to fish and have a 20 ft boat which is set up for both bass and salmon in the ocean, so I keep busy.

It's past my bedtime.

Rob

Hi Rob, and welcome.

I coulda swore I had a VXII 2x7 mounted on an L61 with Sako lows in the past. Might be that I'm 'mis-remembering' or maybe just feebleminded... I suppose you must have tried it though - is it the occular or objective end that's giving you trouble?

Seems like I remember Leupold may have started using a little larger objective end on their 2x7s a while back, so maybe that's the difference. Mine are all 70s vintage and can't imagine their little dinky (32mm ?) objective bell giving you grief.

Anyway, good luck with the mounts and hunting.

Dick

I have a vari-x II 2.5-8 (I think its 8) that is mounted with the old style (not optiloc or 2pc) lows. If his can not fit, Sako did have those super low rings. Maybe this is what Rob has???

Nothing like mixing business with pleasure. Several years ago I was reading some accounts from and about a fellow named Darner that had a job similar to that and had umpteen Mule deer in the BC records. He hunted the San Juan Wilderness areas. As you know, scouting muleys is a bit different than scouting whiteys. Damned muleys can be 10 miles away in an "instant". Big whitetail deer are my weakness now. Have been for many years. I've had a few top the 300 live weight mark. Those were not "corn fed" critters. I have a few "sets" of horns mounted but I get a great deal of satisfaction dining on the whitetail steaks. The "Sako Flower" is something else you can find on Ebay while doing a sako search. They aren't on all the time but I think they are neat. I don't have one but came close to bidding a few times. No expert on violets, but they may be in that family. Elk huntung here is a joke now so no need to mention that. Suffice to say that the "hunting" is a modified high fence hunt for animals well scouted in known locations. Hunting was much more sporting 20 yrs ago when there was no "season".-Mike
