• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Greetings. I have just acquired through a family member an NIB AV Hunter in 375 H&H. Serial number is 652XXX. The story is it was purchased new in Germany in 1992 in anticipation of an African safari which never materialized. Has been in a safe ever since, complete with box, papers, etc.
My question regards mounting a scope. I intend to mount a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36 scope and I like the idea of using the Optilock rings without additional bases. If I were to go this route, can anyone tell me which rings to order (height and identifying #)? Also, is there a recommendation for a supplier -- or someone on the forum who can supply?
I'm also open to other suggestions for good alternative mounting setups.
I would post pictures now, but I won't be picking it up for a couple of weeks.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome! And congratulations on your acquisition.

That scope is an excellent selection for a .375 H&H -- it has plenty of field of view at the low end if you ever want to hunt large, dangerous game like buffalo, and has plenty of magnification at the high end both for accurate load development and sighting-in, as well as for long shots on African plains game or American big game like elk.

I think that you'll find the lowest Optilock higher than is necessary or desirable for the 36mm objective on the Leupold. If you can find a "medium" in one of the original Sako rings or, even better in the Sako rings that were contemporaneous with the A-V. Those rings had a cap that was slightly more than half of the ring diameter, but was otherwise very similar to the original Sako rings.

The Leupold "medium" ringmount would also be the right height. Some people believe that because it is trim and light that it somehow isn't strong. It is the mount that I have on my Sako .375 H&H and in 15 years it has never given any trouble.

Thank you. I've been looking into the Leupold rings and they look like an attractive alternative.

Hello brb45 and Welcome to the Forums. I have Leupold rings on 2 of my Sakos and they do very well. I use them on my 30-378 wby mag, and if they were going to fail this would be one to test 'em on...so far they work perfectly! You really can't go wrong with original Sako ringmounts, tho' they are pricey, they are designed to to work with the magnificent Sako dovetails...Good luck and Happy Shooting!-Bloo
