• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Well, I've been looking forever for a Sako .22. I found one, finally. It is a M78 and simply beautiful.....no distractors. I'm a lucky and poorer guy! I'll post a few picks under Rick's M78. Regards.........

Rick- I'm so ignorant about the sakos after 1985 it's pathetic. This looks to be a very well made .22. what has me confused is the 223 tag on the pics. Have you had a chance to shoot it, or is that the first thing you did when you got it home.-Best, Misako

Well, there is no 223 tag, Mis50. I think clips pop up from time to time on Ebay and Numrich. I think my little .22 is a 1985 vintage Stoeger. I have been looking for one for years so it's my presumption that not many were made. Regards, Rick.

I believe what Misako is reffering to is the picture number. Which coincidently happens to be number 223. Preceded by pic 222 then also 221.

Now I see....the pic numbers were 22-1, 22-2 etc. I just dropped the dashes. No, I haven't had time to fire it yet. I sure would like to find out more about the M78 like when they were made and when they stopped and how many were made. Regards, Rick.

Not sure how many they made, but I want to say Stoeger imported them for a few years and they made quite a few of them. I believe they also made a target model with heavy barrel and wide forestock (????), which will be rarer than the sporter such as yours. They also made them in .22 Magnum and .22 Hornet, but you don't see those like you do the .22 LR guns. Great little guns, and are great shooters.

Hello Deergoose....I don't think that many were made......I check the boards every day and this is the first one I've seen in years (99%). I can't believe many were made since you just never see them...never!!!...I may be wrong but that's my gut. The only others I have seen were in 22 Hornet. Regards, Rick.

ok, Rick.

You've forced me to dig up my files to see what I can find on the M78. The best I can tell, they were made from 1979 - 1983, all Stoeger imports as described in their catalogs. All serial numbers should be in the 7xx,xxx range.

I have a M78 in .22 Hornet which, according to Sako, was made in 1983. Very nicely made little rifle, although, like many Hornets, it's a bit fickle in the accuracy department: half MOA one day and 1.5 Moa the next. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours in .22 LR.

Yes they make a HBAR version. Wide forend, barrel does not taper and no checkering. I bought one when stationed in Germany. What a tack driver!!

Rick, just in case you didnt notice this one FYI I thought you may be interested to know.

Sako M78 sold on GB 4-14-07 for $1,176

quote from sale:
Sako Model 78 Sporter, .22 long rifle cal. bolt action rifle. 22.5" barrel. Mfg. Finland. Excellent condition! Gorgeous little .22 sporter with the great Sako pedigree. Bluing is 98% and wood has only the slightest of handling marks. Wood is nicely figured walnut with satin finish. Cheek piece. Adjustable sights. Original box and papers. Includes Leupold M8-6X scope in as far as I can remember; Sako rings. Excellent shiny bore. Box magazine.

That is in line. I paid $750 for mine and although outrageous, really a steal. Until you have one in hand you will never know. I plan on finding more.....this little 22 might become the most collectable Sako of all time before it's over. Thanks for the post assm732.....I'll sleep well tonight!!!! Regards, Rick.

I bought a 78 in 22 long rifle this spring and it is a dandy of a shooter! I mounted a burris 2x7 with a german reticle in it. What a great squirrel rifle this should be! I have shot it at paper and it shoots great! Currently have 3 sakos in my stable--94 sporter, 94 bull barrel, and the 78 sporter. Keeping my eyes open for more.
