• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hey guys, I just found this site and seems like there's a lot of information here!!
So, I have a Sako/MRI in .270 Win. It already has a 26" Kreiger and a McMillan stock. I already have two other .270's so I'm wanting something else. I really want to keep the .270 barrel, just rechamber to a .270/.300 RUM or something like that.
Is it possible to open the bolt face up enough on a L691 to accommodate a RUM casing?
Thanks!!

Yes. You'll probably have to open up the magazine feed rails a bit, also. Otherwise, it will probably work as-is for the larger cartridge.

Thanks for the quick reply!!
I figured it would also need some magazine work to feed reliably.
Z-Hat makes a .270 UltraCat, its based on a .338 RUM then minimal taper and sharp shoulder (like an Ackley), I sent them an e-mail so hopefully we can make something work!!

Another smith just told me that the L691 can't be opened up since it already has a Sako extractor and probably would have extraction issues...anyone have problems with that?

Yes, I have problems with what the "other" smith told you. Find another smith who knows what he's talking about.

I don't mean to cast aspersions toward anyone, but remember, in most states the profession of gunsmithing is unregulated. There are many incredibly talented and knowledgable gunsmiths, but anyone can hang out a sign and call himself a "gunsmith". Some are and some aren't -- and every individual has his limitations as to experience, equipment, and competence. Just because a guy can mount a scope or install a choke tube doesn't necessarily mean he can regulate a double rifle or properly rechamber and headspace a barrel.

Okay I'll talk to him again, its a pretty well known rifle builder ( CenterShot rifles) with a good repuation, but he probably doesn't have any experience with a L691...

Does it work with the existing unmodified extractor, or does it need to be replaced/moddified?

Its the cut in the bolt where the extractor goes, the extractor now sits deeper and with a bigger casing it doesn't look like it will "clip" over the rim...unless the extractor is either modded somehow or the cut in the bolt is filled in the re-machined to a shallower depth...??

That's what I'm thinking. I think the other smiths just haven't dealt with a L691 and weren't sure it was possible. I think I'm just going to buy a reamer then me and my local smith and do it...

Be aware that the minimal tapered, sharp shouldered cases (Ackley type) can lead to feeding problems from a staggered magazine. You might want to talk to your smith about potential remedies or try some cases (if you can find any without fireforming) to see how they feed out of the magazine before you dive in. If your smith is unfamiliar with thus situation I would hesitate using him for this type project. Good Luck!

PC, yep I already have a .243 AI that needed some tweaking to feed right. I've decided to just do a .270-.300 RUM, not "Ackelyed" out...I'm kinda tired of fireforming :)
