• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Can anyone help me with a barrel for my L579 ?

The old gun has finally burn't out her heavy barrel, does any member have a spare or know where I can purchase one. Should I go for a stainless if no originals available. Serial number is 29337 so is a fair age but always shot 3/8" groups without fail [as you would expect from a sako.]

Regards,

Pete @ VLIndustries Qld1.

Pete:
Without inspecting the barrel I can't say for sure, but it could be that the rifling has eroded in the throat section of your barrel causing severe bullet jump from case mouth to where the bullet actually engages the rifling. Depending on the degree of erosion you might be able to get more life out of this barrel. If you hand load try seating the bullet out farther to shorten the bullet jump. If this works then the erosion is not too far out, so having the barrel set back & rechambered to create a new throat area could be a relatively inexpensive fix or just shoot it with the new seating depth & do nothing to the barrel. A good smith could also do a chamber casting and be able to precisely measure the extent of erosion and make a recommendation if setting the barrel back or installing a new barrel would be the best course of action. Finding a used Sako barrel, although not impossible, would require a lot of patience & luck and probably cost you nearly as much as a new aftermarket barrel. If you decide to go with a new barrel, get the contour dimensions from the different barrel makers to see which one matches your barrel contour. Most of the barrel blanks come with a 3" long shank @ the chamber end but your smith can cut this to match yours. An exact match is not always possible so some wood removal in the barrel channel may be required. If you don't want to alter the barrel channel, you can send your barreled action to the barrel maker (not all of them do it) and they will make & install a custom contoured barrel for you. Last time I checked the turn around time on this was 18 to 20 weeks. A standard contour takes about 5 to 7 weeks to be delivered to your smith for installation. Whichever barrel you decide on, get the top grade they offer. It's worth the extra money. Stainless or blued is more personal preference than difference in performance. Shilen makes a #5 contour that matched my L46 HB contour almost perfectly. Just a little wood work. Good Luck!

To paulsconstruction,

thanks for that info I will bring the old girl back to town and see what we can do but I don't hold much hope as it has fired a lot of rounds over the years. All of them hand loads but not hot or over the average .Time will tell ,thanks again.

Pete.

Blackjack,

Calibre is 243 but I would consider anything that would fit the action as long as it is sako.

regards,

Pete.

Hey Pete, that will be a tough find here in Australia but you never know if you keep looking.

If you absolutely must have a genuine Sako barrel you might consider sending it back to the factory.

It can be done and if you give Beretta a call in Melbourne you will get an idea of cost. Ask for Tony.

I have a 243 Varmint barrel, I believe it's a Bofors, ie early L579. It was drilled for Unertl mounts and previous owner pulled it and rebarreled into a 220 Swift. Not sure of the round count rifling looks fine as does the crown and the bluing's in good shape. I was looking for a action and a period correct stock until I realized that I could probably buy a complete rifle for less. PM me with your info and I'll pull it out and take some pics if your interested. I'll thow it on the classifieds here shortly.

Trouble is that it will be difficult and expensive to get it from the States to Australia with your homeland security regs.
