• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hi,

I`m look for some more info on a .300wm I have recently purchased.Falue, year of manuf ext.I cant find the way to load photos, so I will describe it best I can.Its in very good condition.

The serial no is A111, 5368.. , then the bear head, then what looks like RV.

It has the bearshead on the grip cap and engraving on the floor plate and trigger guard, a rosewood forend cap and skip line checkering.

Many thanks

You have a Deluxe sporter. The A-III (A-3) was the successor designation to the original L61R, but that designation was only used for a couple of years (around 1980) until it was superceded by the A-V (A-5). The A-III was identical to the L61R except that the A-III had a shrouded firing pin with a cocking indicator protruding underneath the shroud. For reasons that are unclear, Sako made the tang on the successor A-V a bit longer, although the action screw holes remained in the same place. Therefore, a stock for an L61R will interchange with one for an A-III, but neither fit the A-V without alteration.

A used but "as new" Deluxe will typically bring $1,000 and up in the U.S., but this depends on how the buyer perceives the quality and grain of the wood. Extra fancy or appealing wood can bring somewhat more, as can more desirable (less common) calibers. Visible signs of use like dinged wood and worn bluing will knock a Deluxe down faster than its "standard" sibling.

Are 300 win mag guns too uncomfortable and jumpy to use. Holding aiming and shooting is too difficult. Does the barell lift after stooting and looses accuracy and to jerky or is it all up to shooting skills.

Please advise or would a 270 AV BE A BETTER BUY THAT A L691 300 WIN MAG

edd- You are asking questions like someone who is not at all familiar with firearms. I will try not to hurt your feelings. Recoil (or felt recoil) is a matter of perception to each individual. I personnally don't like shooting 30 cal. magnum rifles as a steady diet. Others, smaller than me, just love them. Buy a rifle in a caliber that will fit the game you are hunting mixed with the skills you have as a rifleman. It sounds to me like you need to try out a few weapons (read sporting arms) in different chamberings to see what you like and to find a good fit. A local gun club has the people you need to hang with so you can get that help. I mentor youngsters all of the time at my local Izaak Walton leage range. Some opt for .243s some .308s and some start with 7mm Mags. I don't think a 300 Mag is a good place to start.-Misako

Misako,
Good points. I hadn't thought of this possibility as this is posted elsewhere as well.

If you are a neophyte, I would heed Misako's advice. Work your way up.

I tried a 300 wm yesturday at the range, it is hard to find anyone who has one in Melbourne as most use .270 and 30 06 win. The magnum cartridge is on big mother and packs one hell of a punch. Shooter here prefer more economical and user friendly calibre. Many like to shoot alot of rounds and thus opt for 22 25, 243, 270, 30 06, 308, 303.

Its been a steep learning curve but it appears that nothing beats experience and you boys appear to have it. But be gental with new gun supporters as they keep the sport moving forward and help fend off those anti-gun activists who are gaining in numbers.

Keep the information flowing as it makes the sport relivant and inspiring, imagine if we only talked about more complicated an trivial marksmen issues the sport want captivate the entry level marksmen.

We all start somewhere and a journey back there for shooters might make difference in everyones shooting.

The sport is running risk of becoming ellitest if we start thinking some topics are not worth talking about. The site is full of people of varying abillity and gun owners need to continue making efforts to broaden membership.

Thanks boy and girls the journey has been good and I have decided to purchase a Sako in 270 it appears to be a great all rounder that offers something for everyone and does not make shooting a struggle or uncomfortable. The feel is important and the amount of damage the animal experience can ruin the skins and good eating of quality venison.

Cheers experts

Good choice edd- That time you spent at the range will be remembered as the best thing you've done to enhance your outdoor experiences. The .270 WCF is a great round and should serve well with moderate recoil. You can always change to another round when you feel the time is right.-Misako

eddsukkar,
I agree. Shooting played a vital role in my survival in my younger years. As Misako says, the .270 WTF will be a good place to begin.
Good shooting!

Well I am buying an AV 270 win or a TRG-S M995 in 270 win . It looks great and isnt very heavy. The 300 can wait and there is plenty out there. I look forward in killing alot of deer with this and eating plenty of venison this coming deer season.

I will remmember to pratice before embarking on some serious kills.

Should I do some reloading or not bother and buy them ready.

and not too sure whether i will get synthetic or wooden stock it looks like a synthetic might be a good traveller, not heavy.

On last question "do all 270 win rifle have relatively the same recoil or is there a difference depending on the make?

edd: The 270 Win is a great choice and with a good bullet, can take just about any medium to large class non-dangerous game. It is certainly more than capable for Deer, Elk, Stag, Antelope, Sheep, Goats, Hogs, Caribou, Black Bear, and much more. I prefer heavy-for-caliber bullets and really like the 150 A-Frame or 150 Partition for this caliber but there are other good ones too. And, the recoil of the 270 at about 17 ft-lbs is quite a bit less than that of the 300 Win at about 26 ft-lbs which will encourage more practice and more confidence. My humble opinion is that if a hunter needs something bigger than the 270 Win, 308 Win or 30-06 then skip the 300 Win and go with the 338 Win as it provides much more versatility and punch with just a little more recoil. The 338 can push a 180 grain Accubond at about 3100 fps and go up to a 275 grain A-Frame with an SD=0.344 that can take any creature that walks this earth. Of course this caliber is not legal for dangerous African game but it would be a good choice for a large range of plains game. Sorry, guess I got off track a bit...

5280sakonut that is advice put in a understandable way as it might difficult to try all cals at the range because we dont know that many people prepared to let you shoot their guns inorder to to get the info you might need. Excellent advice that I will try and investigat at the range. When I get to the big banga stage I will consider a 338 as they are usual in very good condition as they must not get much action in melbourne.

Anyway cheers Its good to see you can still get info from credible sources.

SA- You will please clarify the reference to the rare but possibly effective .270 WTF. I have no reference to it ,hence no loading data. Sounds like it could be a fun round to play with in a not so serious venue.

Misako,
"WTF" i.e., Way Too Fast cartridge was discontinued due to broken shoulder sockets:monkey:.

SA- Sounds somewhat like the brother cartridge the "WTH". A pressure problem due to excess case capacity. Shooters would get the surprise of their possibly short lives.
