• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I think my scope is too far forward... how to fix? Pictures inside.

Below this is the L61R Finnbear (Garcia M74 Super) that my father handed down to me for Christmas. It has an older Leupold 7.5X scope with Weaver rings.
I feel like I need to move my head forward pretty far in order to get the full picture through the scope. So these are my questions:
1. Does the scope look like it's too forward? Or is normal to have to move your head very far forward to get the full view from the scope?
2. If I do need to move the scope backwards, it appears I need to buy new mounts. Is this a correct assumption?

Sure looks awkward. I know it is too far forward for me. You can take the weaver stuff off and get Sako ringmounts for it or the leupolds may be an even better choice for that scope.-Misako

I think your answer is scope rings - Sako Optilock one piece. Leupolds are OK, and cheaper.

I don't think those will work. If you want something low priced and high quality, try the Millets. Usually, the Leupold ring mounts are reasonable enough for most. I don't care for aluminum at all.-Misako

Okay, I found the Leupold Sako Ring mounts on OpticsPlanet.com
Looks like they are $55.99. I assume this includes two rings.
My current scope is an old 70s or 80s style Leupold M8 7.5x40mm. According to Leupold website, the "low" ring should work for all 40mm scopes but "medium" may give better clearance.
Would you order medium for my scope? Also do you think gloss or matte black will be best?

I would go for the mediums for what I see in your picture. It looks like the scope covers are about perfect clearance as it sits now. -Misako

"Conventional" Leupold (Redfield-type) turn in rings will usually clear a 40mm scope bell with "low" rings, but the Sako ringmounts, which attach directly to the receiver and use no base, are somewhat lower. The "low" Sako ringmount will typically clear no more than a 33mm objective, while the "medium" ringmount clears a 40 to 42mm objective.

Thank you all... ordered the 1" Medium gloss Leupold rings. $57.99 delivered... this is a perfect excuse to get my Sako back out to the range and sight her in with the new ring mounts. Hopefully the old Leupold 7.5x scope with the new Leupold ring mounts will be a nice combo.

Good luck with your scope mounting. If you Google "Leupold M8 7.5" you will find that your "old Leupold" is a very sought after scope!
Please post pics with your scope mounted in the new rings. It would help the rest of us to see what works.
Best wishes!

Unfortunately they don't work that way... the bottom of the Weaver bases are tapered dovetail to match the Sako receiver.
Also, the Weaver rings have a nested screw so they can't be placed in different spots either. The mounts work fine for the 40mm scope, I'm just looking to get full eye relief an inch or two further back on the stock.

Beautiful Finnbear. I have used most of the mentioned mounts, but for this classic piece I would seek out some original Sako rings from the same era as your L61R. Good Luck
