• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I have one i finnish, but it will be great with one in english :-)

Greatings from Denmark, PJ

Pajo- The 581 was never marketed in the USA. It was only offered as a protoype and only a few offered. It was considered to be too costly to build for mass marketing at the time. Hopefully one of the members has a NIB with paperwork and can send you a copy in English.-Misako

Thanks, that would be great - its a fine rifle, and i am looking forward too use it for hunting - PJ

Well, Pajo, I was going to be a Good Samaritan. I dug out my NIB M581, opened the box, and unfolded the owner's manual to find that it is printed only in Finnish! Not a word of English is anywhere on it. It seems there may be no such thing as an English owner's manual for this model.

HOWEVER, in the same plastic sleeve was a little index-size card printed in English and inviting the new owner of the rifle to join the Sako Collector's Association organized by Texan Mims Reed and Kansan Jim Lutes and having "now over 400 members both domestic and international". So, it would seem that this particular gun was certainly commercially imported to the U.S. and the card inserted by the importer.

I've never fired this gun (haven't even assembled it). I bought it largely because of its scarcity and uniqueness. It is a .243. Which caliber is yours?

Sorry I couldn't help, but it is interesting the things you dig up when you start looking.

Mine is in 308, thanks for your help, looks like i am gooing too lean finnish :-)

Since we are on the subject of the L581, Is it true that it is considerably like the 591, with the exception of the magazine differences? - Misako

Pajo,
The instructions are most likely similar to an English translation as Misako suggests. Learning Finnish would not be worth the effort. It's kind of complicated (Euro-Hungarian) type language. I could certainly teach you all the cuss words and how to find your way around the country and read a menu :bigsmile3:. Did yours come with the same card like stonecreek got regarding the now defunct SCA? That is indeed interesting.

stonecreek,
Where did you pick up your 581, if you don't mind me asking? Do you think SAKO or an importer actually did that? Was the seller a member of the SCA maybe? Good find, at any rate. I'm stuck in the pre-'72 L61R rut and someday would like to find a rare vintage SAKO. Like, as old as I am!
Regards,
S-A.

Misako: The 581 is very different from a 591. The 581 has two rows of three locking lugs much like a Weatherby Mark V in the smaller action used for the .240 WBY. The dovetails are not tapered and use a different mount. And of course it is equipped with a detachable magazine. It has an "oil" or matte lacquer finish on the stock. Send me an autographed $500 bill and I'll tell you how it shoots.

S-A: I found it on Gunbroker, however I believe the previous owner posts here on this site from time to time. If I recall correctly he had two or three of them and wanted to thin the herd.

I found it from my lokal dealer, no papers :-( - i have never owend a sako before - its a beauty

Look under Forum Topics, and then to Reference materials. I posted a copy of the 581 papers supplied to me by fellow member Emmerth. It is all in Finnish.

I am shooting mine (.243) and have yet to come up with the correct load, but I am getting close.

Enjoy

Two best so far are:

Hornady 100 gr BTSP Interlock
