• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I was made fun of for naming my guns. I'm a big sci-fi and fanasty book reader. And mostly I name them after J. R. R. Tolkien references. Just asking if any members do this or am I the only gun collecting nerd. I really dont think I have a problem, but need a second opinion.

Sorry that doesnt ring a bell. Please enlighten me on the name stormbringer. I really like that one.

JFish- You are hopelessly ill. I am sorry I have to be the one to tell you. The first clue was joining this forum. It is guilt by association

.(sorry about the bad play on words)-Misako

Yes I do! I call it my "onegun" and I have been "sick" for a hell of a lot longer than most on here.-Misako

Dont forget about "Brown Sugah" Why she's a my favorite. I'm even thinkin bout calling my L46 the little "son of a Birch"

Woody, the pet names we give our toys are unique to our own feelings and influences...so its wide open, but it also has a function, for example ,Stormbringer is much easier to say (to me) than..model m995 TRG-S 30-379 Weatherby Magnum...it rolls off the tongue much easier!-Bloo

Well I'm glad im not the only sick one around. And I agree that names are much easier to say than the model number. And when people ask me what im shooting and I tell them that its "Grond the Hammer of the Underworld" I love the look they give me. Some people just dont get it. But then they give their boats goofy names.

tex...a 6x222 is this the same as .222 rem or "triple deuce"? I've got a "thumper" of my own on the way, looking forward to seeing if it will "Be another Sako"-Bloo

Funny stuff. I've never named a gun but when I first started predator calling I went to a meet in Needles, California. It was a contest between the California and Arizona clubs. I met a man by the name of Sam Dudley. In predator calling circles Sam is a legend. He was an old man when I met him and sadly he has since passed on.
Sam had a 20 gauge shotgun he called Singing Sally. One day he used it to dispatch a wounded coyote by hitting it over the head with the gun bending the barrel. Sam tried to straighten the barrel by bending it on the bumper of his pickup truck but he never got it right so he learned to compensate. When he wanted to shoot a coyote he couldn't point the gun at the coyote. He had to point it at the ground just under the coyote. He knew what he was doing, I guess, because he won that meet with a total of 6 daytime called coyotes.
Funny thing........I asked him why he didn't just buy a new barrel and he told me that it was okay the way it was. No one ever wanted to borrow his gun a second time.

Man, if you met Sam Dudley, you're WAY OLD. LOL My Brother-In-Law, Dick Cavenah, was President of the California Varmint Callers circa 1965 I believe. Used to hang out with Dougherty and Kittredge at the Bow Hut in El Monte, CA, in the early 60's. Dougherty's B-I-L was Dick's calling partner, Holt Dandridge.

Those AZ - CA meets were something else. I was about 15 when it all started up, so I'm way old too. I have a picture somewhere here of Dick and Sam Dudley presenting the winning trophy if I could figure how to post it.

But to the subject, I believe Gerry Blair called his favorite 10 gauge "Moose Dick". Never resonated with me for some reason.

I was 19 or 20 when I met Sam and his son, Bill. I knew Dougherty but I can't say I ever "hung out" with him. Dougherty seemed kinda stuck up and always talked down to me. His partner, Ron Holdstock, was a little easier going and I enjoyed talking to him. Ron made me a great portable light that I wish I still had. I think Holt Dandridge was actually Dougherty's father in law.
I used to hunt with Thumper McDowell who was a neighbor and friend of Dougherty's. There's a picture of Thumper in Dougherty's varmint calling how to book. I don't recall a Dick Cavenah but in that year he had to have been in the Pasadena chapter which is the one I belonged to. I was a member in 1965 and attended all of the meetings but I can't remember all of the names.
Thumper once told me a funny story. I guess Holt Dandridge was hard core. Those guys were all avid archery hunters and liked to hang out at the Bow Hut. Anyway, since they all pretty much lived in the Pasadena area they liked to go up the hill to hunt in the Angeles Crest area. One night Thumper and Holt walked out to make a stand. Holt was calling and lighting when Thumper said to him, "Holt. Something just crawled on my boots and is still there." Holt just kept calling and lighting. Again, Thumper said that something was laying on his boots and he wanted Holt to shine the light down to see what it was. Holt just kept calling and lighting so Thumper kept pleading with Holt to shine the light on his boots. After a few minutes of this Holt finally shined the light on Thumper's boots and there was a big diamondback rattler laying on them. Holt reached down and grabbed the snake by the tail and tossed it into the brush. Then he said, "Now, for Christ's sake, will you be quiet??!!" Thumper told me that he said, "F*** you!" and went back to the truck.
I'm 66 now. Those were the free wheeling days for predator calling. Mt Lions and bobcats were considered unprotected with no limits and we could hunt them day or night just like coyotes. We killed a lot of bobcats back then and when you went into Nevada or Utah no one was calling there. Coyotes and cats were totally dumb and you could really make a haul. Lots different now.
I often wish I could find some of the people I hunted with back then but when I did a search for a couple of them a few years back I found out that they had passed on. Scares me. lol

Well, your memory is better than mine, so you're doing fine. I'll be 66 in June. I'm sure you're right about Dandridge being Dougherty's F-I-L; my recall isn't too good on the details. And it WAS the Pasadena chapter of the CVCA; I believe they were the first in the state.

Dick just sent me his entire file on the club along with his club jacket, patches, a bunch of decals, and other miscellaneous collectibles. He must be feeling his mortality. I hang out once or twice a year in AZ with some friends off one of the calling boards, so I'm still into the predators pretty heavy. I believe Dougherty is still down in Texas somewhere after a career with Pearson and work with Cabelas. Your comments on his personality are accurate IMO. I heard Kittredge was still up and running in the Sacramento area; I believe he sold the Bow Hut in Mammoth years ago. A few of the guys are still around. Most are probably not. Bastastini died a year or so ago; a real character.

Those were the salad days of calling, no doubt. And fur prices were good.

I knew Danny Batastini pretty well. He joined the CVCA several years after I moved to Alaska. I didn't keep in touch with anyone from those days. If you go to Danny's thread, What it's like to be hard core, in predatorprofessionals.com you will see a couple of pictures of me there. I'm the moe guy he talks about there. In the second pic of me that Danny says is my favorite you'll see me holding my Sako Forester 243. Danny really wanted some recognition and worked hard to achieve it. God rest his soul. He was an okay guy.
I hunt occasionally with the son of an old time CVCA member from the Pasadena chapter. This guy is 3 times the caller any of us was in the old days. He's in his early 40's.

I was just rereading this thread, Mike. I remember the guy in the picture but probably didn't know his name back then. I was pretty young and green and in awe of some of the stars in the club. lol

If you're still hanging around on the thread I'd enjoy hearing from you.
