• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Get model 85 or old L461 and re-barrel?

Hi All, I'm new to the Sako Collectors Club.

I'm just about to buy a new Sako 85 223 however there was a nice early (about mid-60's) L461 Vixen 222 in the shop for $850 (Aus). The old L461 seemed like a more nicely made rifle compared to the new 85 (blued, wood). I was thinking the L461 could be re-barreled to a 223 and would make a nice rifle, albeit an old one. What do people think - is it worth the effort to re-barrel or am I asking for trouble and it would just be better to spend the extra and get a new one? Has anyone re-barreled a L461? If so, what does it cost roughly for a sporter weight barrel?

Thanks in advance.

TravelTen,

Your never asking for trouble with a Sako IMHO

It would be a GREAT shame to rebarrel or rechamber an original .222. That caliber is increasingly rare. Buy it and shoot it as is! Its performance is within a hundred FPS of the .223. The .222's are typically very accurate.

Sounds like you are looking for a way to get cheap ammo. The .222 was the benchrest shooters caliber of choice till the PPC's showed up. .222 is easy to reload, and there is plenty of ammo available - although not at cheap as some of the .223 garbage you can find on the shelf.

I gave up on cheap .223 finding it easier to hit my mark with a rock. Your buying a fine rifle in a very accurate caliber. Stick with the .222, shoot it, and hit what you are aiming at!!

Dennis Tobler makes some of the best barrels you can lay your hands on if you end up going that route.
I shot his barrels in my match rifles for years and have absolutely no complaints!

Of course I realize I am three years behind on replying to this one!
