• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Any info on finnbear SN-17176 L61R 30-06 would be greatly appreciated. I am not a collector, I was given this rifle by my father prior to serving four years in kodiak with the Coast Guard 94-98. I believe he perchased the Sako in the mid sixtys and fired it very little as it is in excellant condition. The gun performed flawlessly in Alaska. I was able to take a trophy class mountain goat, roosevelt elk and many nice sitka blacktail bucks. I will be returning to kodiak again next summer for another tour and would just like a bit of info on a very special rifle. Also if anyone has had a similar rifle fit with a sinthetic stock, what brand did you choose and how do you like it.

Can't help you with info on the rifle.
I have stocked two Sakos with Chet Brown fiberglass blanks, and they have worked very well. I bought unfinished blanks and did the prep work and bedding myself- it isn't difficult.
Brown does not have a website that I know of. They're located in California. They sell finished stocks as well as blanks.

Mitz,

I suspect but cannot confirm that your serial # Sako is from the early/mid sixties. My serial references for the L61R in 06' start at 28xxx which corresponds to late 1967 production. Perhaps other members have more complete detail.

As far as the synthetic stock, I'm not sure if McMillan makes the old style stock that your L61 came in, BUT they do make the hunter style with palm swell & raised cheekpiece to fit the L61. McMillan even says that the Sako style stock is possibly the best hunting style stock out there. But, they are not cheap and take a while to get. The quality and fit are very good however. The gray painted stock looks good with the dark bluing. Your L61 will not fit the AV as the L61 has a shorter tang.

I duck hunted on Kodiak three years ago with Paul Chervenak of Kodiak outdoor adventures. Can't wait to go back there.Took some nice King Eiders. Wish I could have brought a Sako along.

I have used McMillans with great success on custom rifles built on the L61 action for over ten years. I have nothing but praise for them even if they are just a bit heavy. They hold up well hunting from horses in the Rockies. I think Rimrock (Borden Rifles) also has synthetic stocks to fit Sakos. McMillan and Rimrock both have web sites.

Pull up McMillan's web site and look at the internet specials. They usually have a few glass stocks for the AIII/L61R (short tang) action. They usually run about $275, which includes shipping. I have bought a few of these and they're great.
