• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I have a new, never fired, in-the-box, Finbear in 30.06 with matte finish and no sights. The wood is quite nice, a bit on the light side with well defined grain. The rifle is 100%. Ser # is 802535. Can anyone tell me the date of manufacture? Also I'm thinking about scoping it and putting it into use or should I just maintain it in its virgin state, any comments on this? Any other info or comments relative to this rifle would also be appreciated. Thanks LG's

By the serial I'm not sure but would guess the following:

  • It is based on the AV action and has the Sako #4 trigger assembly. It also likely has a 22" barrel. I believe Sako started to use the Tikka trigger assembly around the 85xxxx mark.
  • It was likely made toward the end of the AV production run around or slightly prior to1990.
  • Since it was made toward the end of the run, it likely does not have one piece floorplate frame/triggerguard or checkered bolt handle.

To confirm what you just said, daveg1, and after I've checked my personal records, my brother has an AV Hunter in 7mm in the 617,xxx range. I know it has the checkered bolt knob and I'm suspecting that it has the one piece floorplate/trigger guard assembly as well. The rifle is very well built w/ a very nice stick of wood on it. And it IS one of the most accurate Sakos in our arsenal, for what that's worth.

Thanks for the info on my Finbear. You are correct it does not the one piece floor plate/trigger guard and checkered bolt handle. I've decided at least for the time being not to scope it / put it into use. Even though it's not that old I guess there is some nostolgia associated with it and I feel it adds something to its character in that it's still as new & not fired. Thanks again. LG's

You won't be sorry by leaving your AV .30-06 NIB. Sako values, like most firearms, are going up. Wait 5 years and you'll see what I'm talking about.

good luck,
DeerGoose
