On another forum a gentleman was inquiring if some L-461 actions had very slightly longer magazines. It seems that he and a friend both have L-461's rebarreled to 6x45 and found that cartridges loaded to an OAL that fit one magazine would not fit into the magazine of the other. As he measured it, the magazines were about 2mm different (about .08").
This aroused my curiosity, so I measured some of my L-461's, plus the one A-I I own. Sure enough, I found the older ones (those with the "S" shaped magzine release lever) to be about 2.15" as measured at the open floorplate, while those with the round plunger magazine release were about 2.25" measured in the same way. This is about 2.5mm difference, or very close to that reported in the thread.
There was a discrepancy with one rifle having a longer magazine with the older release, but this was a custom rifle which I purchased many years after it was built and the action seems to have some mixed features -- and may even be a "put together" action.
Rounds like the .222 Magnum and 6x47 are very crowded in the Vixen magazine to begin with, so if there is a slight advantage to the later action in this regard, custom builders woud be wise to pay attention. (As for me, my next L-461 project is a .20 Vartarg, which is built on a .221 Fireball case, so magazine length is copious in any event).
How about it? Anyone find a similar discrepancy in your Vixen magazines?
