• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hi,

Would anybody who has both a standard cartridge and and a magnum one be able to tell me what the difference is in the magazine dimensions.

Standard: https://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/mgwi/prod/S5940485
Magnum: https://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/mgwi/prod/S5940496

I have an AV that I have had rebarrelled into a 404 Jeffery. This is a considerably fatter cartridge than a the standard '06 width. In order to feed optimally, the magazine should be wide enough so that each cartridge case gets support from the magazine walls and the surrounding cartridges.

Longer and better explanation here: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/sho...VZ-24-Mauser&p=3946608&viewfull=1#post3946608

The ideal dimensions for the magazine width would be (for the 404 Jeffery)
25.8mm, or 1.013" in the rear
23.8mm, or 0.938" in the front

If anyone has the time to look and measure I'd be very grateful.

I measured an AV338 mag 3.60” long, .765” front and .885” rear. I also measured L61R long action( non mag) early serial number. 3.645”long,.765” front, .800” mid and .968” rear. I had this part in my hand for measuring. The AV I measured in the rifle so I could be off a couple thousands . Hope this helps.

Thanks for finding out Tomball.

I guess I could have been more clear, though. What I meant about the 'front' measurement is where the shoulder of the cartridge starts, i.e. it is only relevant where the sides of the cartridge body touches the magazine sidewalls.

Also, perhaps the rear measurement for the 338 WM magazine should read .985" rather than .885"? Otherwise it would be smaller than the standard magazine :)
Nevertheless, it is still smaller than what would be optimal for that cartridge.

Thanks again for taking the time.

I just removed the 338 action from the stock and measured again to verify measurements. Rear was .894” with a digital mic. All original as I bought the rifle new in 87. I then measured Sako V 7 mm ultra mag SS with rear of 1.03” for length of 2.50” where it then tapered to .890”for remainder to front. Outline of the cartridge like you mentioned above. This is closest to your required measurement.
