• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I have a Sako Forester L579 pre Garcia (1965) Deluxe .243 with light colored wood.

Is the wood Maple, French Walnut?????

I know I need to take pictures but a large # of the older Sakos have this same type wood.

They were advertised as having French Walnut stocks so I have no reason to doubt that. I have also seen some beatiful darker French Walnut Deluxes that are among my favorites. Deergoose has a couple that are simply the prettiest I have laid eyes on.-Misako

It seems I heard mention somewhere on this site of the wood being Maple, however I have a muzzleloading flintlock of tiger stripe Maple. The wood on the Sako has dark stripes running horizontal which would be indicative of the French Walnut,

Thank you for confirming the wood type.

The wood is European walnunt (perhaps from France, but lots of "French Walnut" comes from somewhere else on the continent). Sako finished its Deluxe stocks with a very light stain that left the walnut somewhat blonde in color. Lots of European walnut exhibits a strong fiddleback that is reminiscent of quilted maple. The fiddleback usually shows up as vertical striations, while the actual grain in the stock will be predominantly horizontal. That strong fiddleback, coupled with the light-colored stain, causes many people to believe that some Sako stocks are maple. Not so.

It is walnut. Some deluxes have nice but not spectacular wood, while some have truly remarkable wood with incredible figure. The best 2 I have ever seen in person (one from another member of this forum) were translucent and threw off many different colors in the light with strong vertical striping. Almost a 3-D effect. You would swear it could not be walnut but it is. Only on a Sako. A custom stock like that would cost $10,000 or more.
