• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Deluxe Floorplate: Ever seen one like this before?

Sako Collectors Club Discussion Forum

Very, very, nice, indeed. Never have seen one like that. I wonder how many different ones actually were done. You suppose they took special requests back then?

misako,

My cup is empty, can you share?

You can do what I do. Find a busy corner and wear tattered clothing and a sign that says-"Will Work For Sakos".

S-A, first new ones in a long time, possibly a year. We have quite a few in the album but there are more out there that we haven't seen. If you go to the old site's photos -on page three- there is an album of several and the last two we found are on the first page. The site will not let me put the new ones in the album-Mike

Thanks Mike,
I'll take a look. Jim had a post up on some engravings but I can't find it. That's why I was kind of wondering if they may have had their own custom engraving by request. Wouldn't exactly be a new concept. I guess that's another question I have to ship across the pond. There's always a surprise with Sako - at least the old guys. I think the Beretta driven machine is pretty predictable.

Hmmmmm. I will ask someone in Finland who should know that. Interesting. Wonder where they got the Bison idea? Books, maybe?
Thanks,

If you'll notice, the description lists a 21" barrel, and the photos are consistent with that length. I'm assuming that the barrel has been cut by a previous owner. Does anyone have any information that would indicate otherwise?

And did you notice in photo #9 that it has SMOOTH, uncheckered dovetail flats?! The only other actions with this that I have previously come across were the Model 72's of the early Garcia era. This SN in the 7,000's is many years prior to the 72's.

I just emailed Finland about the engraving. Probably while you were posting. Barrel does seem too short to me. Very possible this has had some work done on it. Could the stock have been replaced?

A few things stand out. To my knowledge, or at least to the rifles in my safe that hit the sixties, Sako used a bevel cut crown. This one appears to be rounded. The oddity is that it is a 12 land, or appears to be.
Here is from an obvious 1962 gun listed on Gunbroker:
:wink2:. Kinda weird its not posted.
The only 20 inch barrels I am aware of were on Carbines. I've bought three "new" ones recently. They are out there, but again all with beveled crowns.
I'm thinking the barrel has at least been cut-off.
The dovetail flats are checkered. See #7. Must be a bad angle on 9!

I did send the seller an email and he said to the best of his knowledge it has not been cut. Keep in mind he is selling this rifle for someone else. Also after this one sells, he has another deluxe that he will be listing.

hawki,
It may not necessarily say "Bofors Steel" on it. Hard to say exactly when the dispute with the Swedes kicked in during that time and SAKO had to stop stamping it..

I have been digging through all my Sako information and I can not find any 21" barrel. The only thing close was on the Mannlichers/Carbines. I would have to say with a 99% certainty that this has been cut.

Hawk must certainly be correct that I was mistaken about photo #9. Photo #7 clearly shows the dovetail flats checkering. I suppose it is possible that the seller could have inadvertantly mixed photos of two different guns, but I suspect that the checkering simply doesn't show up in #7.

With an SN in the 7,000s and a floorplate with the old-style "s" release lever, this would certainly have had a Bofors marked barrel. If the barrel is not marked Bofors, then it is almost certainly a replacement.

Despite the issues the gun may have, I'd love to own it for the floorplate alone!

Someone with better computer skills than mine needs to capture the floorplate image for posterity!

The photo is in the photo section on page one, next to the "Birds of Prey" picture. The old site will not let me publish it in the page three album with the other engraving patterns.- Misako

A very neat rifle, nonetheless. I am intrigued by what appears to be the 12 land barrel, myself. I have never seen one on anything larger than .224 cal.

If they ever used 12 lands on a Finnbear it has to be very early, again it should have a "Bofors Steel" stamp.

stonecreek,

I have an L61R (Stoeger) with flat dovetails.

The mystery continues!
