We had to shoot gophers before the rain, I didn’t get all the guns out, but I shot my 17 Hornet, 220 Swift and the PPC deluxe. Tally wasn’t big, but neither were the gophers. This was a “daily double”...

Does that counter mean you've got 97 of those little buggers this Spring already? I'm jealous. You had better start head shooting them, you're not even leaving enough for the hawks and crows to munch on.......

Actually, Montana is a great place for shooting critters of all kinds. A good gopher day will turn in 400+ gophers, all are confirmed hits and accounted for on a clicker and the second number is doubles, triples and so on. You need multiple guns to keep a cool barrel...

I know that the "gophers" you shoot are a ground squirrel, but which species exactly? I gather that they are typically much more concentrated (higher population density) and perhaps a bit less wary than prairie dogs, correct? And of course, they're a smaller target.

This is what we have here in Illinois. The 13 lined ground squirrel. Just not near as many as what must be in Montana. Shot them off of the lawn mower with my "Single Six" back in the day.

Did not know it's possible to shoot that many varmints in one day. Back in the '90s in Pennsylvania I used to hunt groundhogs during the summer months. A really good evening would see maybe 8 to a dozen kills. Now the coyotes have decimated the population; I haven't shot one in years...
