• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Can an AV Stroeger be a Finnbear?

Sako Collectors Club Discussion Forum

Finnbear is just a general term used for the long actions- L61, AV, 691, etc. On the earlier guns, they put it on the barrel. On the AV's they pulled it off the barrel but put it on the pamphlet.

Don't get hung up on the name- just think of it as the long action, Forrester the medium and Vixen the small.

Generally, the medium action calibers are: .22-250, .243, 7-08, .308. The long action based are 6.5x55, 25-06, .270, .280, 30-06, and the magnums.

Next time you are in a sporting goods store, pull out a reloading book and look at the overall length (OAL) of the rounds, You will see the differences in length. It's worth the $20 for the book. You will also see how most rounds are simply derived from one very popular round (30-06 for instance) and are merely necked up or down.

You will also pick up info such as the .308 can actually propel a 150 gr bullet faster than the 30-06 all else being equal, since the .308 can be loaded to higher pressures. Again, it's worth the $20 just from what you will learn.

Dave,

My reason for asking was because I own the Stroeger import 270 and could never figure out what designation it carried. I am familiar with reloading as I have done it for several years with a 7MM that I had, a 30-06 and now the 270. I could just never figure out what people referred to when they said long action. I have never had my 270 referred to as a Finnbear.

Steve,

If you have a Stoeger import it is likely an AV action. By this time, Sako pulled the Finnbear name off the barrel, but if you have the original box or manual, you will see it there.

Dave

Like I made it.........Are you sure it came from the factory that way?

At 2.235" OAL the 7x57 falls in between most medium and long action rounds. With the right bullets it may work out, but I'll bet you can't use a ballistic tip type bullet over 150 grains with a medium to slow burning powder and have it fit in the magazine. Sako chambered the .284 Winchester for Browning in the Sako medium action, and that setup had issues with longer bullets and the 7x57 is even a longer case yet.

Dave,

Sorry it took a while to get back to you. I have the original box but never received the original manual for this gun. I bought it new from a sporting goods store so I made sure I got the box. Will pull it down to see if the manual is inside it.

The first Stgoeger imports were still marked Finnbear on the long action and had the old shroud. I own one. I assume they used up the old parts til gone then switched over to the new style. Sako did the same thing from Riihimaki to L57, L57 to L579 and pre Garcia to Garcia. I own a 5 digit action with a 2 lug bolt. I have seen them with the 3 lug bolt with the Garcia import mark. With Sako anything is possible. Regards, Rick.

Dave,

Finally got to look at the original box and you are correct. Right on the end of the box it states "FINNBEAR". I did not look inside the box for the manual yet. Will do that another time. Thanks again.

Steve

Steve!

Is it the original barrel?? I have never seen a Sako with 7x57 cal nor have I seen it advertised in catalogs or elsewhere.

But as Rick so wisely put it: Everything is possible with Sako!!

Regards

Jim

It is my understanding that there were a few prototypes in this chambering. I do not have one, but have seen it documented somewhere. Sako Finnbear will be able to tell us, as he is a Sako metric caliber guru. We should explore this further. Any pics of the caliber markings ? Sako font ?

I saw a 7x57 at the Tulsa show 4 years ago. I asked the price and the dealer said it was sold......call it 97%......$2200.00. They must be rare.....this dealer is a Sako guy. Regards, Rick.

Dave,

Somewhere there must be a mis-understanding. My gun is not a 7 X 57. It is a 270. Not sure how my reply got mixed up with the one by mattoo48 but some how it did. Thanks for the help anyway. I am still going to look for the manual in the box to see if it is there.
