• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Browning Safari L461 Varmint Contour?

Sako Collectors Club Discussion Forum

Anyone know or have reference to the diameters and radii for the varmint barrels used on the old Browning Safari Sako; I think I'd like to do one for a project/rebuild on a L461. I have a beautiful piece of English Walnut to us, but cannot exceed 0.700" muzzle diameter without the forearm getting too thin. Thanks for the help.

I need to measure an L579 Safari HB for another SCC member, so I'll be glad to measure my L461 Safari HB at the same time.

I hope to get to it before the day is over, but please understand that I'm retired, so my time is very limited due to the constant and unanticipated demands of that occupation.

Okay, here's what the L461 Safari HB in .222 Magnum measures:

Diameter of barrel at receiver ring: 1.095"
Diameter at fore end tip: .789"
Diameter at muzzle: .665"

The Safari has a longer fore arm than some stocks. It measures 10 7/8" from the front of the receiver ring, so that second diameter is that far down the barrel. The barrel appears to have a more/less straight taper from just in front of the second step down to the muzzle.

These are carpentry measurements taken with a tape measure and not machinist's measurements, but pretty close, I think: Front of ring to beginning of first step: 1 7/16 inches; to beginning of second step, 4 7/8 inches.

I think the stepped barrels have a somewhat elegant look. Pencil barrel Brownings don't always yield the best of accuracy, but the HB's I've used have been as accurate as the contemporaneous Sakos.
