With ringing in the new year we Sako Collectors passed something of a milestone. As those of you American Sako enthusiasts who have obtained a Curio and Relic federal license are aware, any firearm which was manufactured fifty or more years ago is eligible to be shipped directly to a C&R holder.
The Bofors Steel stamp on Sakos was dropped sometime in 1968, therefore, if a Sako has a Bofors Steel stamp then it is almost certainly fifty or more years old as of now. The caveat is that Sako continued to used the Bofors-marked barrels until the supply was exhausted and we have found a very few rifles with a 1969 inspection date in the records.
The bottom line is that if a seller is in doubt about the DOB of a Bofors Sako you may need to request the Level 1 factory record on that rifle to assure the seller of its C&R eligibility.
