• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I own several Sakos but i have recently added a most interesting one to my collection. It is an AV 416 rem deluxe serial #801XXX. It is in new, unfired condition and wears a lovely, dark piece of factory walnut. However, it has a jewelled bolt-someting I never seen on another Sako. Did some come from the factory this way, or is it something that was added afterwards? Thanks to any who can provide some info on this beautiful rifle.
P.S. I found this rifle at a gun show and picked it up for less than $1500 Canadian!

Does anybody know where I could get this info? Doesn't seem to be anyone out there that can help?

I have never heard of a factory AV with a jeweled bolt. It is likely aftermarket.

Judging by the serial, your AV was made at the end of the A series production run, probably 1989-1990. It likely has a double recoil lug, put in to beef up the stock since Tikka triggers were used and they are slightly larger than the Sako #4's and therefore require a bit more wood to be removed in the front.

The 416's also started to become popular around this time, hence the chambering. I believe Sako also came out with the .340 Weatherby around this timeframe.

Different things pop out of the Sako factory, I once owned a NIB Sako AV laminated that was glass bedded. I know for a fact the gun was NIB and can only guess as to why they glass bedded it.

Good luck with the .416 now get it over to Africa to whack an old Cape Buffalo!

Thanks for the info. That pretty much confirms my thought about this Sako. It does have the double lug. Its only the second deluxe I've seen with the dark almost chocolate walnut. Wish I had bought the other too(300 Wby). Of my 15 sakos (post 1988-pre 75's) it is the most attractive. I wish I knew the history of the rifle and jewelled bolt. I have a VX 1.75-6 mounted and ready to go. I'm not sure when it might see Africa but it will likely be used in the Yukon this fall for moose/grizzly.

I'm thinking it was made after 1991.
I have an AV from 1991 that doesn't have the secondary recoil lug. As a result, my stock split after about two hundred rounds.
Could you take some pictures of your rifle, especially of the underside of the barrel and the cutout in the stock?
I have my rifle in a McMillan stock, but would like to have a new walnut stock made for it. It wouldn't be hard to mill a slot for a secondary recoil lug.
If you could post those pictures here, or e-mail them to me at [email protected], I would be grateful. Best load for moose and bear is a 350 grain Swift A-Frame with 80 grains of RL-15. 2,550 fps. Very accurate with safe presure.
Thanks,
lawndart

I'll post some pictures but it will be several weeks as I'm travelling on business. I haven't loaded for it but I will probably use 350's as you suggest. I have a 416 Rigby with open sights loaded with 400's for heavier/closer stuff. (not a Sako, of course, but a R77 from the first year of production with a very nice piece of walnut) Thanks for the reply.

Here's a pic that a buddy had of the .416. I'll post more in a few weeks. It gives you an idea.

I tried to post it in the message. It didn't work so look in the photo album '416 deluxe'. Its there now but i'll try to resize ans post again.

I've never seen a SAKO with a jewelled bolt, but on the other hand I havent seen many deluxe versions. If I were you I would try www.sako.fi and if the info is not there you can send them a mail. I have a std 416 Rem and its with a normal bolt

Thanks for the info. I've posted a pic of this rifle in the 'pictures' section.

Kjeldsen- I dont think any of them came from the factory that way. I had my
L579 jeweled before I shot it in 1960. Back then, It was like putting fancy
hubcaps on your car. My brother talked me into having it done. I must say. I
liked the way it looked. It kind of finished out rhe way the old deluxe
looked. Mine has a diamond on the grip cap, not a pine tree. It still
carries the same 6 power Weaver scope and Sako med rings. By the way, My
deluxe cost $152.00 then. The scope and rings were purchased a year later
for $38.00. The bolt 'jeweling" was $5.00--- Misako50

Wow. What is the serial number on your L579 deluxe? I've seen the L57's w/ the diamond inlayed grip cap, and with the pine tree. But all the L579s deluxes that I've seen have been w/ the pine tree. And all of my really early L579s all have the pine tree. Chalk your configuration up to the "never say never when talking Sakos" scenario.

DeerGoose- I'll have to get the serial number for you later this weekend. It's in the posession of my grandson, who's turkey hunting with his father. I gave them the rifle a few years ago to make sure it stayed in the family. I can't find a record of the serial number in my insurance papers that I have kept.-----Misako50
