• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hi All,
New to the forum. I could probably find my info with a lot of web-crawling, but am hoping some of the Sako-aficionado experts here might save me time with some 'one-stop shopping'. I'm contemplating a med-bore mag project - a long-range hunter/shooter rig (something like a tactical approach without the typical tac look) - possibly a 300 RUM, but more likely a 338RUM, 338-300RUM or 338 Lapua. The typical approach of using a Rem700 action for the basis seems a bit light for this app, and it would appear the Sako actions have a larger bolt dia (haven't come across any dimensions) and thus, would be a better action. Obviously, a long magnum action is called for, with good magazine length for something like an RUM case with SMK-type bullets. Since actions aren't as easy to find as they used to be, I'm guessing I may have to watch for a decent deal on a whole rifle and recycle it. I looked at the TRG-S and it seemed like maybe the best candidate, but I could be overlooking other models that are equally viable? So, I'm seeking your input on:
1. What Sako action models would be suitable candidates for the above project? Accuracy is a prime criteria. It would be nice to reuse the factory trigger too, so any input there on differences/quality would be appreciated (understand the TRG-S's have a single-set trigger as std?). I kinda like hinged floorplates from an aesthetic standpoint (esp. if I used a wood stock), but could probably live with a detachable box magazine too (esp. if a syn stock is used) - I know the TRG-S lacks a floorplate. I'm less familiar with the newer model Sakos than the old ones (for ex., saw a decent L61R in 7mmRemMag in a local shop and didn't have my measuring tools, but was wondering if the action would work OK for the longer/larger cases noted above).
2. I see the TRG-S lists a diff extractor for the 338LM vs. the large-head Wthby - anyone know the story there? From looking at SAAMI specs, I'm guessing some metal removal on the Wthby extractor might make it work OK for the 338LM, but that's a bit of speculation. May be easier to just replace such a part IF you could find it.
3. A std mag bolt-face should work fine for the RUM's if the magazine is long enough? I presume the bolt-face could be opened if one wanted to do a 338LM - anyone done that? On what action(s)?
Guess that's it for the moment - thanks in advance for sharing your advice/experiences!

Didn't want you to feel left out. I want to welcome you to the Sako Forums. Actually that is about all the help I can be. After reading about your proposed project I discovered my brain hurt from trying to figure out what you were up to. I find that you have a huge "headstart" on me so my advice will be simple------None. Someone that is more advanced with the big rifles will be along soon-hopefully.-Misako

czymtn,
Welcome to the forum. You have a lot of thoughts there in so few words. Why not just by-pass the issue and look at the TRG-42 in the phosphate with 27" chrome molly barrel in .338 Lapua Mag? The 250 and 300 gr. Lapua Scenar bullets have an excellent BC.
I think you may want to do your ballistics homework and then decide on a round. that should make it easier to decide on an action. Of course, it won't win a beauty contest, but if you want reliable long range work the TRG-42 platform may serve you well.
Good Luck,

sala-ampuja,
Thanks. I did originally check the TRG-42 - poor stock design/fit for me, pretty expensive, and I don't really want the clumsiness/'thorniness' of the full tactical design. I think I can build a more suitable rig for less $$, but there's no argument with the performance of the TRG-42 - everything I've heard is positive there.
I did do some ballistics checks and that's why I can go either way - RUM or LM, as the ballistics are little different. I'll take whichever path the best rifle foundation opportunity takes me.
Thanks again,
czymtn

czymtn,
Fair enough. Cartridge wise, I like the .338 LM. The Scenar 250 and 300 gr. bullets have good BC's and at long range have a great track record. I've never studied the RUM as I will not likely be buying many more rifles (no comments from L61R, please:bigsmile3:). I have more than I can shoot now and a bunker full of all kinds of ammo.
I am doing a custom around the first of the year on a Sako 85 action, but it is not a long range unit like we are talking about.
There are good selections out there. You will find what will suit you the more you look.
Good Luck,
S-A
