On another thread we discussed loading data for AA2200, a powder that is great for small capacity rifle rounds and that has just been reintroduced by Accurate. However, Accurate's website no longer has the data posted for this powder, so here is some I had printed off a while back and have scanned in order to post here:

Well, somehow this just isn't working. I'll try again.

Stone,
From one who is growing in the small caliber area, I find it interesting that the .222 Rem has an advantage across the board from the .221 Fireball. There was some talk by someone who was going to chamber (I think) from the .222 to the .221 Fireball. I'm wondering why? What's the advantage?
Good Information. Could you take an L461 Vixen HB in .222 rem and go to a .223 or even a 6.8x 43 mm?
Specs on the 6.8 SPC:
Parent case .30 Remington Case type Rimless, bottlenecked Bullet diameter 0.277 in (7.0 mm) Neck diameter 0.298 in (7.6 mm) Shoulder diameter 0.402 in (10.2 mm) Base diameter 0.421 in (10.7 mm) Rim diameter 0.422 in (10.7 mm) Rim thickness 0.049 in (1.2 mm) Case length 1.676 in (42.6 mm) Overall length 2.315 in (58.8 mm) (courtesy of Wikipedia)

The advantage of the 221 over the 222 or 223 is that it uses about 1/2 the powder per load with nearly the same performance. 3300 to 3400 FPS with a 40 gr bullet for all practical purposes will do anything in a PD town or to any varmint that the 222 or 223 will do. The report is less, fouling is drastically reduced, and heat build up in the barrel is nowhere near what you get when you put 20 rounds thru a 222 or 223 in a dog town situation. Plus the accuracy is equal to any varmint round out there. Being one who likes to shoot more than clean & wait for barrels to cool, I find the 221 to be one of the best under 300 yard varmint calibers out there. As it is not a wildcat, ammo & brass are easily obtainable. Most young varmint guys are too obsessed with velocities & minute differences in trajectory. A PD is 9" high. If my trajectory is 2" less does that mean I will miss or would be unable to compensate for that thru marksmanship?
Remington made a huge mistake when it introduced this round for their XP 100 pistol, but a lot of varmint shooters have adapted it to the rifle for years with wonderful results. I guess the secret is out. Try it you'll like it.

Paulsonconstruction,
OK, I can see that. Thanks for the information. Certainly is something to think about.
I still am looking for the answer to part Two regarding the 6.8. I'm sure that would heat up a barrel quite fast. "They" say a suppressor heats up 7 degrees with each consecutive shot.
If those little PD's are out there taunting you , you certainly want to help them evolve to a higher purpose as soon as possible:angel2:.

I lack all knowledge about the 6.8, but I was on a thread with Sakotex & cmjr & if I remember correctly they both were very familiar with it and either had, had built or were thinking of building rifles for that round. They did mention using the small Sako actions, but I don't remember the details Their interest was for a under 200 yard deer & pig gun. Seems like one of them was using a suppressor. Hope I remembered all this correctly & it helps. I have "sometimers" disease- sometimes I remember & sometimes I don't.

Paul,

That's a good explanation of the advantages of the smaller case of the .221. A shooter can always get more range and power by going to a larger case, but using as small a case as gets the job done is definately advantageous in high-volume shooting as with prairie dogs. I'd love to have a rifle chamberd for the 5.7 FN as that cartridge seems to be exactly what a Hornet would be if designed today rather than many decades ago.

If you'll note on the AA2200 data, the maximum load they show with a 40 grain Ballistic Tip is 21.0 grains yielding around 3325 fps. I'm not sure how I came up with my load of 21.5 grains, but its chronograph readings would make it very consistent with Accurate's data as it runs 3375-3400 fps in my gun. It might run a few thousand PSI more than the 49000 they show, but whatever it is generating in my gun, it is well within the constraints of the case as cases show now tendancy to stretch or buldge. However, with the new lot of powder that is currently available I would definately back off to, say, 20.5 grains until proving that its burning speed is consistent with the older powder.

Saw that 5.7 @ a gun show last year and had the very same thoughts. Seems the only guns available are those little semiauto burp guns. Could we be talking "custom"? You already got me checking issues like what action, bolt face, mag feeding. How would you go about it? Could this be the answer to our Hornet frustrations?
Can't wait till I get my Fireball back from the smith to try some of that 2200. Thanks for all your info!

OK, I'll take my 6.8 SPC questions elsewhere. I guess no one is familiar with this cartridge at all. Including me, only as it pertains to which Sako action I might be able to use to to build one. Probably the L461 HB. Shilen barrel, I guess. With the right bullet combo, It could be a good 300+ yard varmint rifle. Of course, I mean something larger than a PD. You don't actually eat those things? Or are they a nuisance and you leave their rotting little corpses out there to fertilize the farm?
Personally, I'd rather go Elk hunting.
I'm done. I'll let you know what comes of it.

I guess I missed the second question SA. I guess if someone said go build a 6.8 to me I would be looking for a PPC bolt on a small action for singleshot use. I'm not sure if the 6.8 would feed from a L461/A2 but it might work. I'm not a big fan of taking a big bolt face and trying to use a smaller case. Having said that I have a Rem 700 in 20PPC that has a Sako extractor that works fine. In a perfect world the L579/A2 action would be the best size option. Sometimes they can handle the small base and still extract, have you tried to fit a L579 bolt and a 6.8 case to see if it will stay on it, I'm thinking you want it to feed right?

cmjr,
Thanks for your thoughts. I already have a few 6.8 mm SPC's and think I'll just not bother with trying to work with a Sako action. Thought for a while it would be fun. I don't have an l579 to compare with, but when I get a chance I'll see. Was thinking of a Shilen barrel. That can be on the list for later.
Thanks again.

S-A:

I don't see why the 6.8 Rem wouldn't work just fine in an L461. It is derived from a shortened .25/.30/.32 Remington case and its .420 head size should be well within the capacity of both the L461's bolt face (with minor enlargement) and magazine (with perhaps just a tad off of the feed rails -- or not).

Stonecreek,
Thanks. Makes sense. I just don't know the older actions that well. Guess I'll be looking for an L461 HB or get a Shilen made with a little tighter twist.
Appreciate it,
S-A
