• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Got the .222 home the other day and I'm very pleased with it so far, although I haven't yet had a chance to fire it yet. The old 6x will do for a test shoot while I decide how best to scope it.

A few flaws but all in all not to bad (I think it looks better in the flesh than in the pics). Shame about the cracked buttplate though.

Something that looked odd was the A1bolt style, and as I hadn't checked for matching numbers before I got it home I was pleased to see they lined up.

Did many of 461's come with this type of bolt?

Interested to here your thoughts.

Pakama- If you are going to look for a replacement buttplate, that would be an easier one to find. The more "stylish" bolt shroud was placed into service during the transition to the new model designations. That is why you have an A1 shroud on an L461 action. Foresters and Finnbears shared this trait, also. It is a bit uncommon to see a bolt that is not numbered, but they do show up from time to time. Some were not marked (factory faux pas) and some are replacements. If you are going to have a shooter, I would fit a small rubber butt pad to the rifle, for convenience.-Misako

I once owned an L61R with a shrouded A-style bolt. It was properly numbered to the gun. You find this ocassionally, but they are somewhat rare.

I agree with Misako that, while you could spend some time chasing down an original buttplate, the gun serves you as well with a plain rubber pad like Pachmyr sells. If you happen to be long of arm and/or neck, it would be a good time to use a 1/2", 3/4", or full 1" pad to lengthen the pull without cutting the stock.

The bolt is number matched to the gun (hand engraved) I guess the high S/N puts it in transition period.

Good point about l.o.p. SC, I am a long limbed 6'4" but I hope to get my wife into a bit of Centrefire (she has .22LR) I don't think the mild recoil will bother her, so an original buttplate will stay.
I'll just keep half an eye out for a good one.
It looks like over torqueing the screws caused the cracks. This may be common.

I am trying the photo link thing so I hope they work.

Nice little Rifle .... Are you in South Australia ... I have been looking for ages for and L461 vixen or A1 for ages but have had no luck yet .... where did you get yours from ??

Cheers
Matt

G'day Mattyj, Yes I'm in SA. We shoot mainly on our property on the Lower Eyre Peninsula.

I got the L461 HB from a store in Qld. that lists online, a couple of pics but otherwise sight unseen. I asked plenty of questions to make sure it was all original and in good nick, and I feel we got a good deal. You could expect to pay around $1500 or so. The post to SA plus transfer through AGS cost a bit over $100.

If there are plenty out there, no one seems to want to part with them. A mate spotted this one for me, so it can help to let a few buddies know what your after (unless they also want one).

Good luck with the search.

Hi Paul ,
Yeah I shoot on a property up in the mallee scrub here in SA , mainly after goats .
I have been watching used guns like a hawk but have missed the last two that came up on there . They dont last long .
I just want one as a collector , wont shoot it except at the range . If you see any let me know .
Cheers Mate

Hi Pakama,
I can support what Misako and Stonecreek have said above. I bought a L461 in 1978 with SN 153100 .222Rem. It has the A11 bolt shroud. In addition I also have a L61R in .338Win Mag that was made about the same time with the newer bolt shroud on the old action.
