• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hi fellas,

Very recently my 20+ year old AV began not ejecting the spent casings.

I took it to a local smith and he said that the ejector blade looks "way too short".

He then proceeded to demonstrate to me the fact that my boltface is well aft of the ejection port before the blade even begins to protrude, probably by 5-6 mm.

He said this is way, way, too far back for the casing to eject. Don't get me wrong, it still tries to throw them out, but they hit the wall of the ejection port and fall back into the well area.

He says I need a new ejection mechanism (bolt stop assy or whatever you wish to call it) but he's not even sure that will do the trick.

Two questions:

1. Where do I get that part for a long action (7mm Mag) AV?

2. Can anyone who has one of these rifles in their safe simply find some good light and let me know the exact location of the boltface (with respect to the aft of the ejection port) when the ejector blade starts to poke through the little hole in the boltface.

Sorry if my terms and descriptions aren't 100% proper, but I'm explaining it the best I can.

Also, I'll try to post a picture to show what I'm attempting to relate.

Thanks in advance,

Rick

You need a new gunsmith. The position of the bolt face when it engages the ejector is proper as you describe it. It is the angle that the ejector strikes the case head and the amount the ejector protrudes that makes ejection work properly. When the bolt is fully to the rear against the bolt stop the ejector only protrudes something less than .10".

Ejection from a Sako can sometimes act funny. It could be that a tiny piece has broken off of your ejector blade, leaving it a tad short. It is also possible that something is obstructing the ejector blade, preventing it from popping fully into position as the bolt is withdrawn. It will take some "fiddling with" to fix it by someone with more knowledge and patience than a guy like your gunsmith who simply writes off the the problem as one of design without knowing what he's talking about.
If you don't have any luck otherwise, you might contact Accuflite in Pennsylvania. They work regularly with Sakos and will likely have or can get the parts if new parts are needed.

Thanks Stony,

Actually, that's not the half of it with this smith. I was referred to him by friends, and I'd never met him before. He wanted to "weld a small piece of metal onto the ejector first" to see if this would cure the problem, and if it did, he would then order the "expensive" new piece to replace the ejector.

I would have laughed if it wasn't so sorry. Anyway, there was no way I was going to let someone tamper with the ejector if they'd never done that before, so I just left with a handshake. In a worse case scenario, I'd let him order the new part and install it, but that's all.

On another matter, my wife and I are trying to set up a whitetail hunt in Texas (having never hunted there before). Do you know of any quality outfitters in S. TX that you'd recommend?

Thanks for the help with the AV. I'm going to see if I can't clean and lube it and get it to function a lot better than it does. If not, I'll just pretend I'm one of the benchrest crew and pluck the empty case out after each shot.
