• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

7mm rem mag

Sako Collectors Club Discussion Forum

I keep seeing Sako in 7mm. Is there a reason for this? Is it just a great round? Did Sako focus on this cal for awhile? Is it just a good shooter in the Sako? I'm wanting a Sako in 30-06 but keep seeing the 7mm rem mag in ads.
Thanks ,

Hello mcz. The 7mm family of rifles - 7mm X 57, 7mm 08, 280 rem etc are inherently flat shooters ideal for deer and antelope in the 130-140 gr. bullet. The 7mm rem mag and 7mm shooting times western on the other hand are belted magnums. These guns shoot hotter and flatter, however, they kick like a mule. I have a Sako L61R in 7mm magnum and never shoot it cause it kicks too hard.
The 30-06, on the other hand, is without question the caliber that all others are measured by. Not only do you get a great deer rifle, the versitility of the cartridge allows 180 grain loads for bear, moose and elk. the '06 won't beat you to death either. My brother's ruger 270 kicks harder than my L61R in 30'06.
Guns America has 5 or 6, 30'06 L61R's for sale right now. You should be able to pick one up for around $650 bucks in 98% or better cond. That's my 2 cents. Regards, Rick.

I have a sako in 7mm mag and it is a tack driver with a 139gr ballistic
.couldn't ask for a better rifle..It is almost as good as my wheatherby in
257mm .good luck......deadeye jim

Any thoughts on this caliber? I have not shot one but may put one together. I have 2 stocks almost finished for the L61R and can not decide what to mount..with an 06 I can shoot it cheap..about the only caliber left

Thanks for the info..I know the ballistics are flatter than the 06 up to around the 200 220gr bullet but I do have that 308 Norma mag for that area ..although I really like the 06..it is a little snappy on the recoil but I never remember after the shot.

So Wookie I picked up that 7mm Rem mag barrel..probably will put it on the L61R. The guy put like 5 rounds through it and decided to have a 7mm weatherby cut and mounted..does tree stand hunting in bean fields so I guess needed more ????umph
Someday I may use the 300RUM on something

Way Back in the 1900's I bought one of the first Ruger 77's in 7 mag to hit the local gun shop. I reload and was using a 150 or 154 grain bullet. I zeroed it dead on 200 yards. I was shooting off the hood of my truck with a jacket rest. I wanted to see how it would penetrate at that range and used the metal screw off cap on my military gas can. I wedged it into the stump and fired expecting it to fly off some where. It did not move. If you are familiar with the army gas can lid it has a hex wrench fitting hole in the middle. I centered it in my Leupold 2x7 and fired 5 times. I thought I missed every time. The group was much smaller than a nickel and had penetrated each time. There was one big hole and 2 close ones. I also shot some groups on paper with it that were as small. I bagged quite a few deer with it. The same gun-pawn shop right outside a military base pulled a Sako Finbear in '06 out of pawn some GI had failed to pick up. The only trading material I had was the Ruger. The 7mm was not missed long, the Sako shot every bit as well. I have tried to trade for a couple of 7 mag's later but have never owned another but always felt I would find most of them as accurate.
