• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I just got my first Sako rifle this weekend it's S number is 88xxx something. I got it off a old man i know. The quality of this rifle is very good the trigger and bolt. It has a bull or varmint barrel i don't know which one. I guess he did not shoot this gun very much which i believe him in that.
My questions are:
How do i know if it's a bull or a varmint barrel?
The valve of this gun?
I'm going to set this gun up for target shooting good or bad?
What are things i need to look for?
Also can I adjust the trigger not saying i need to?

Croat
welcome aboard.unless I am mistaken there is no difference in a bull or varmint barrel just what people call them
caliber and condition will make a big difference in value also the model could make a difference as well.
Is it a L579 or L461? pictures would help determine the value for sure.
there is no way shooting this gun will be bad for it unless its an unfired safe queen and its not even bad for a safe queen

just stuck the scope on there to see how it will look

Croat,

The pad has been added as this model came with a plastic buttplate. However, it looks like a very professional job and it doesn't appear that the stock was shortened when the job was done. Very nice gun!

Croat -

Not sure exactly what your getting at with the " set up for target shooting good or bad?" question... Other than mounting a high powered scope of the best quality you can afford, she's likely all ready to go. Trigger is adjustable, but it does need to be out of the stock.

Nice rifle. Let us know how it shoots. Dick

Croat367,
Nice find!
Depending on what you intend doing with it that stock might be just fine for the purpose.
If you do want to dress it up in something more "modern" however, please let me know as i have a L579 in my sights that would look real nice in my safe with that stock on it!

I have a very nice aftermarket stock on a L579 .243 that is just like yours. I would like to have a factory stock to replace the one I have on it now. It is a laminated thumbhole stock made by Bishop years ago. It might just be what you are needing for your rifle for target shooting. I will be using mine for hunting, primarily coyotes and deer. That is why I would like a factory stock. I, like you, just recently got my heavy barreled Sako. I haven't figured out how to get pictures included with my posts so if you will either let me know how to post with pictures or email me direct at [email protected], either way, I will get you some pictures of my rifle with the thumbhole stock.
Thanks,

Hello! My first post. I have an older L579 that came with hang tags that identify it as a semi-target .243. The tags are in a safe place meaning I cannot find them with a quick search. I'm thinking semi-target is a semi bull barrel. I'll do a thorough search later.
Best,
Mc

mcknife- I am no expert on hang tags, but that seems to be a gross interpretation that someone added to a Sako tag or it is another hang tag with another origin. We'll find out when you locate the safe place you put them in. Welcome to the forum.-Misako

I have them in hand. Sako FORESTER Bolt Action Rifle, FIC, Wash DC 20022, Type: Semitarget, No. 831xx, Caliber: .243, Date of Inspection: 29.8.69
Hope that helps - haven't taken pictures.
"Gross interpretation"?
Thanks for welcome,
Mc

McKnife, welcome, and thanks for your hang tag information.

Very interesting hang tag. I've never seen the Heavy Barrel refered to as "semitarget", but it is certainly possible. As we've noted many times before, Sako has never been extremely consistent about anything regarding their production, and someone at the Sako factory may have chosen to label the HB's as "semitarget" at one time.

If you can find time to post a photo of your rifle and its hang tag that would be great. By the way, does your barrel have the "Bofors Steel" mark on the right hand side just in front of the action?

Mcknife- Leave it to Sako to add some detail to the description that defies my logical thought process. You have a Heavy Barrel Varmint Forester. It can probably be used nicely for target shooting and those targets could include varmints. Guess I haven't heard them referred to as semi- anything. Scott may weigh in on this and let us know if that is found on the Heavy Barrel hang tags he has seen.-Misako

Mike
Of all the tags i have seen and information I have received I have not seen this yet.
Mcknife
the photo of the hang tag would be great and the full serial number for our hang tag files
thanks
Scott

Scott: Are you interested in hang tags with serial numbers but without production dates ?
Rick

My first attempt at pictures of this rifle using an early SONY digital was disappointing.
I'm looking for our newer model which hopefully is in wife's car. I can report that this heavier barrel is tapered and does not read "bofors" on right side. This rifle was a "safe queen" but I've set it up for long range varmints. I'll post pictures when I get them figured out.
