• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

    New-to-me Sako AV in 25-06

I probably should have made the "Most loads shot in the 2+" range" statement more prominent.

    New-to-me Sako AV in 25-06

Paulson - If your happy with 2+" groups from 6 different factory loads, with one non-repeatable 1", group, more power to you. My point is, 3-shot groups, 5-shot groups, slow fire, fast fire, light bullets, heavy bullets, such performance is what many factory rifles will shoot. I'm not seeing...

    New-to-me Sako AV in 25-06

No doubt this gun is beautiful, well made, and feels great in the hands. Sako rifles are vaunted for their out-of-the-box accuracy, and, that accuracy reputation is baked into the price. I am not seeing it with this 25-06, though. With Sakos, I would expect better than the "good enough for...

    New-to-me Sako AV in 25-06

I will indeed be handloading for this rifle. Expecting to see some improvement when I do. She sure is a beaut, and I hope the improvement will be dramatic. I've got other guns in the "handloading que", but I'll post the results when I get to it.

Yes, I did tighten the action screws, and they were indeed loose.

    New-to-me Sako AV in 25-06

Well . . . On target performance is disappointing, to say the least. This is the best group from trying 6 different factory loads, and I have not been able to repeat it. Most loads shot in the 2+" range.

    Hanky Panky?

Not saying the auction is legit, but it doesn't make sense to have two shills in the same auction?

    New-to-me Sako AV in 25-06

Just came into a Sako AV in 25-06. I am a big fan of the 25-06, and thought a Sako in the caliber would be a nice combination. This is my first AV, and I am quite impressed with the rifle. I really like the stock design over the earlier L61R rifles. I've got some vintage Sako mounts inbound...

    Sako stock finish circa 1987?

I tried hand buffing, but progress was slow. I did some internet research on cleaning old wax off of wood furniture. Most internet pundits said that mineral spirits would dissolve wax without harming a polyurethane finish. I rubbed a little MS on just the very end of the forearm to see if it...

    Sako stock finish circa 1987?

paulsonconstruction and stonecreek - Thanks for the info. The finish is a glossy finish, and does not feel soft. I experimented with some vigorous hand buffing with an old T-shirt, and that seems to remove the cloudy residue, which leads me to believe it must be some kind of rubbed-on wax...

    Sako stock finish circa 1987?

I just came into a Sako AV in 25-06. The 595,xxx serial number puts it at about 1987 manufacture. The previous owner applied some sort of coating or other product to the stock, which has now turned into a cloudy residue. I would like to clean this residue off the stock, but don't want to harm...

    New-to-me L61R in 300 Win Mag

Stonecreek: Interesting observations. I've never thought of the .300WM as an inherently inaccurate cartridge, but this is my first personal experience with one. Maybe something about the L61R design and the .300WM means "they don't play nice together?"

    New-to-me L61R in 300 Win Mag

Just got back from the range. The general shooting setup. The factory loads shot. The results from lightest to heaviest. Tightening the action screws shaved about 1/2" off a 2" group with the 180gr AccuBonds.. While these are only factory loads and the rifle will shoot better...

    New-to-me L61R in 300 Win Mag

"You have reason to be optimistic." My thought, too. I'll reshoot the Nosler 180gr Accubonds I already shot, so it will be interesting to compare the "before and after." It'll be few weeks before I can hit the range, again, though. Wife is out of town and I am baby sitting a new puppy...

    New-to-me L61R in 300 Win Mag

One of the things that I noticed while at the range, is that the trigger pull on this rifle is pretty heavy. It has a crisp let off, but the pull weight is around 6 or 7 pounds. I know these triggers can’t be adjusted to be super light, but I still would like it to be a closer to 3 pounds...

    New-to-me L61R in 300 Win Mag

Its all good on my end, and, yes, folks have been super helpful, which is much appreciated. Also, I was able to source some Barnes 180gn TTSX factory loads to try out. I'd like to try the Barnes 150gr TTXS loads, but haven't been able to find any in stock. I am looking forward to getting back...

    New-to-me L61R in 300 Win Mag

I spent the day dog training, today. The first thing I did when I got home just now was to uncase the rifle and examine the bolt guide. I had indeed inserted the bolt with the guide on the wrong side, which was obvious to many from my posted photos. Doh! Mama always said she never raised no...

The spring is present and appears to work fine.

    New-to-me L61R in 300 Win Mag

Just got back from the range. I did a short barrel break-in procedure, and then shot one 5-shot group with the 180gr Accubonds before running out of time. The 180gr AB did not print an impressive group, but I want to shoot the other two factory cartridges I have before showing results. In the...

    New-to-me L61R in 300 Win Mag

I sourced some vintage Sako "medium" ringmounts from our fearless leader, L61R, and finally found the time to mount them along with a Meopta Mepro 4.5-14 x50 scope. The Meopro is an excellent scope with great glass for not too much money. The scope is bore sighted, and this L61R is now ready...
