• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

TRG22 .308 ammo choice

Sako Collectors Club Discussion Forum

My TRG22 has a 20” .308 barrel. Anyone have a hand load or factory ammo that shoots .25 or less moa at 300/400 yards?

Thanks

Why would anyone with a .308 with a 20 inch barrel possibly expect to get that kind of performance? May be possible but a longer barrel would sure make it more realistic. Sakojim

Hi John,

I've shot & loaded .308 Win a fair amount - can't guarantee that you will get .25 MOA with this recipe, but here's something that has worked for me and many other Finnish shooters:

Brass: Lapua or Sako (neck size only)
Bullet: 185 gr Lapua D46 (close to or touching the lands)
Powder: Vihtavuori N140 (work up close to maximum charge)
Primer: Your choice

If you want to go with lighter bullets, Lapua's 150 gr Lock Base and 155 gr Scenar are good choices. I would stick with Vihtavuori N140 with these as well.

Lapua's factory ammo is also very good quality and they make several loads for .308 Win, this one is the D46 loaded with VV N140:

There's nothing wrong with a 20" barrel for accuracy. The tradeoff for barrel length is velocity, not accuracy. Add barrel length to a 20" .308 and you add velocity and flatten the trajectory. Some would argue that, at least theoretically, the accuracy of a 20" barrel would be better than a 24", because the shorter barrel would have a shorter arc of vibration. With a heavy-barreled sniper rifle like a TRG-22 or a Steyr SSG, the argument is purely academic as it is highly unlikely that there would be any difference in accuracy caused by barrel length.

The SSG offers a military version with a 26" barrel and a police/urban warfare version with 20". I chose the 26" because I don't need the short, handy barrel, but I accuracy wasn't a consideration. The SSG shoots 5-shot cloverleafs at 100 yards; that's good enough for me. I haven't reloaded for it, but I've gotten good results with Lake City 175 grain match ammo and with Norma FMJ - I forget the bullet weight.

This forum is mainly for old collectors items and long range shooting is not often a topic.

That being said...

For 3-400 yards/meters the SMK 168 gr is not a bad choice (with 43,2 gr Norma 203b in my Sauer SSG)

An acquaintance rung steel at 1000 m with his 22 a few weeks ago using Lapua Scenar-L 175 gr (powder and charge unknown).

Sorry for not being able to provide more load data.

Sincerely
Johan

I haven’t found a suitable handload yet but i have shot quite a few 2” 5 shot groups at 325yds using military surplus M118LR ammunition.
