• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Seeking history and valuation on my L61R 30.06 #30441

Sako Collectors Club Discussion Forum

My Uncle handed down a NIB L61r 30.06 to me when I was in my 20s. I learned to shoot long-range and hunt with it. It has been in my safe for a while. I took it out yesterday and took it out to the range, felt great. I have been hunting with a Rem 700 5 R 300 WM for a few years and a Rem 700 40x .308. I was thinking of replacing the Sako stock, cerrakoating the metal, and upgrading the optics for hunting again. Before I do I want to find out the age, maker, and approximate value. What other information could I provide?

I believe your rifle is worth more in the condition your uncle handed down this 30-06 Sako to you (assuming similar shape) than to “customize it with a synthetic stock, cerrakoating & long range scope.
You have two of the best shooting and accurate Remingtons ever made, the 5-R rifling & factory custom 40X, in desirable hunting calibers.
Your 30-06 is a classic rifle in a classic caliber not needing anything to shoot as well as the two rem’s other than possibly a scope upgrade not affecting the rifle value as appropriate rings available.
Cerrakoating is hi-tech but value diminisher unless the weapon is in poor condition, pitted, etc. Leave it alone as a family heirloom & if looking for a project you can find an action or barreled action to customize around.
My opinion.

Leave it alone
Best advice you’ll probably receive regarding your rifle. Frankly and yet respectfully, there’s zero good logic in the thought. You’ve already indicated “it felt great” while at the range. You’ve kept your uncles rifle for all these years original, why have potential regrets? Value should simply speak for itself. Find another candidate - and have at it…..
