• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

    Offset scope base

Update on the offset base: Mom saw my L579 in 308 Win, and had to have one just like it. So I dug out another of my L579 receivers, ordered another McMillan stock, and a Brux barrel, then built her another offset scope base. For this base, I used Sako Optilock bases, and TIG'd the offset...

    Offset scope base

Thanks Stephen. If you knew my Mom, you'd know I only built it out of fear. Just kidding. I love her, but she's a mess! That's actually a rifle I built for myself. But when she saw it, she got all squiggly and excited. So guess who owns it now.

    Offset scope base

This might help someone that has eye/shoulder issues. My 81 y/o mom is right handed, has macular degeneration in her right eye, and cannot shoot off her left shoulder because of her pacemaker. I tried a couple of different offset picatinny mounts, but all the ones I've seen are made for...

Thanks, FLT. I got all squiggly about it!

    Thank you, cl_leg.

    Squaring up a L461

Update. I bedded it in the original stock over the weekend, and shot it yesterday and today. Purists, please don't have an aneurysm, the stock had already been bedded and floated by the previous owner. I won't keep this stock, because of the healthy amount of right hand cast that Sako put in the...

Short Actions What makes the L461 action special?

Absofriginlutely. I get guys asking me all the time to machine 700 and model seven bolts for Sako, or more popular M16 extractors. I won't do it. It's not safe.

Short Actions What makes the L461 action special?

Derek, besides the compactness and beauty of the L461, the feature on Sako L & A series rifles that make them particularly attractive to me, is the bolt guide. Sounds trivial, but for me especially, it's a big deal. I lost use of my right eye while working for Uncle Sam. So by default, I now...

    Checkering tools?

I concur. Dem-Bart's feel sharper, and last longer. I only tried gunline's a couple of times, and right out of the box, they left hairy edges.

    Sako in 6.5/280 Ackley

From the pics, it does look like possibly a 700, model 70, Howa, or Savage profile. That base looks to be either a Leupold or Redfield. See if there are any markings/model numbers on the underside. Measure the distance between hole's 2 & 3. A 700 long action will measure 4.500". A model 70 long...

Short Actions Ever seen a Vixen stock like this?

Can you two please cease the passionate whining, and post deletions, and lets just get on with discussion about the stock?

Short Actions Ever seen a Vixen stock like this?

Stone, you and the other guy both, in a not so subtle manner, suggested I had an integrity problem. That's where I pulled the plug. Again, I'm not here to fight. I'm just here to share. It seems your objective here is to stir up contention. If that's so, please let me know, and I'll gladly leave...

Short Actions Ever seen a Vixen stock like this?

Hah! Truly. But it gives me more uninterrupted time in the shop to complete projects.

Icebear, it very well could be. It'd be interesting to find out.

Short Actions Ever seen a Vixen stock like this?

Except for the action inlet length, it's identical to two L46 stocks I have.

    Squaring up a L461

I've got some Fiocchi handgun ammo in storage that shoots really well. I'd buy more. I like the 40 gr V Max too. I shoot it in one of my 221's. I don't have any experience shooting it at 223 velocities. But I used to shoot 50 gr V Max's out of a 223, and they were very accurate, and held...

    Squaring up a L461

Yeah, I remember in the early 80's when the 1-7" twist A2 was fielded, and then Colt introduced it commercially. Almost all bulk ammo at that time was M193 or copies (55 gr ball). I wondered why the 1-7" twist. When I joined the Army a few years later, I found out why. The M855 round with 62 gr...

    Squaring up a L461

Yep. A flat base 60 gr lead core bullet will usually stabilize at 223 Rem velocities out of a 1-12" barrel. However, I'll probably be shooting solid copper bullets, which are longer than lead core bullets, and require a little more rpm. But even if I chose to shoot 50 gr lead core varmint...

    Squaring up a L461

CV, I'm using a 1-9" barrel. I'll strictly shoot 55 gr bullets out of this rifle. I don't need an ultra fast twist 223 Rem. I've got 22 Hornets, K Hornets, 221 Fireballs, 222 Rems, and 22-250's that are all twisted for specific bullet lengths. This 223 build will fill the gap I've got in the...

    Squaring up a L461

CL, no surprise. It's a 223 Rem. I broke in the barrel last night, and will probably pull it, and crown, and profile it today. And now that I've got 30 fire formed cases, I'll probably go ahead and load a few tonight. I'll probably order a Brown Precision stock for it. I've got one that I...
