• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Hi guys Sako newbie here. Looking at a L579 Forestor 243 online. Seller claims its Bofors steel. I asked for a picture of that he claims he has to take the stock off to see the Bofors proofmark is that true?
He has sent me a photo of the serial # it is
L579 No. 77118. Could someone please properly date this rifle for me and confirm if it is Bofors steel or not based on tbe serial#? From the little I have read on these rifles I am assuming the Bofors was used on the earlier production?
Thanks

He just sent me a photo of Bofors steel marking it wasn't under the barrell after all.

As the photo shows, it is a Bofors Steel-marked barrel. It seems that the Bofors company of Sweden either objected to Sako's use of its name or wanted Sako to pay a copyright fee (or some such) for marking its barrels with the Bofors name. Whichever, Sako ceased to use the Bofors mark on its barrels sometime around 1968.

Thanks. Based an tbe serial # does anybody have an idea of actual date of manufacture?

The serial number is not a reliable way to date a Sako. Sako built rifles out of sequential order with the serial numbers. Rifles with serial numbers next to each other can have production dates years apart. The club has factory records for Sakos within a limited serial number range, so click on the "Factory Records Service" & request the info if your rifle falls within the range of serial numbers we have. Otherwise, using serial numbers, an approximation is all that is possible. I would guess it as 1965 to 1968.

Thanks for the info.

It's only ten bucks to get a copy of the ledger page out of the factory records which shows the exact date that your rifle was inspected coming off of final assembly: http://sakocollectors.tictail.com/ For ten bucks more you can get the date of shipping and to what outlet it was shipped.

Your payment will go directly to support the costs of maintaining this forum.
