Recently bought a L461 Vixen Heavy barrel 222-sn showed it was probably made in '77. The stock had the gloss finish cut back, probably with rubbing compound, and the butt plate was replaced . Other than that it looked to be pristine. On closer examination, the only markings on the barrel were "222 REM". I have several Sako's, all are pre-Garcia's with the exception of a three shot Finnwolf. They all have the usual markings on the top of the barrel next to the receiver- except a custom barreled L46 single shot. This must be a re-barrel even though the bluing matches perfectly, and the length and contour of the barrel are correct. I can detect no evidence of the receiver having been re-blued. If it was a re-barrel they did a heck of a job matching things up. I bought it anyway , and it shoots as you would expect from a heavy barred 222. My question is: has anyone ever seen a factory gun of that era without the usual barrel markings? I think not, but just curious.
