• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. L46 Deluxe 222 rem Mag

Sako Collectors Club Discussion Forum

nice rig. Hard combination to find. what's on the clip floorplate ? We're always looking for new patterns that no one has seen before.

DeerGoose

"Clip floorplate" is one I hadn't heard before, but the engraving on your trigger guard/bottom metal & magazine is in outstanding condition. Nice find!! Can't be too many of those around.

yep. that's the same pattern as mine.

In general, the .222s get the acorns, and the .222Mags get the pine cones. There are exceptions, which we all hope to run across as we seek these rifles.

I have 2 of the same gun. One in a 222 and the other is a 222 mag and I must say they are 2 of my favorites. The bottom metal and clip is (in my opinion) some of SAKO'S finest craftsmanship.

Deergoose, I see a 222 rem mag with acorns for sale by our sponsor sako source. I was liking the idea of acorns and pinecones being 222 and 222 mag but this doesnt seem to follow suit.

The gun on Sakoscouce is a Sako L461. Little newer model. The ones above are L46. I have one in a L46 222 Deluxe and as Deergoose stated, mine also has acorns. My L46 222 Mag Deluxe has pine cones.. All of the L46 rifles as far as I know had clips. Bowne1

No Model L46 was ever made with a "clip". No Sako rifles of any model designation had "clips". Many rifles in the past used "clips" to hold cartridges prior to loading in the gun's magazine, like the stripper "clips" used on military bolt actions & the en bloc "clip" used by the M1 Garand to load 8 rounds into the magazine at once. Gun's that use "clips" haven't been made since WWII & no firearm made for the civilian market have ever used "clips". Strange how the erroneous use of a word or term can overpower the use of the correct one. I have a theory why this is, but that would be a topic for a different forum.

Understand, then what do you call the shell holder in a L46? I call it a removable clip.
Detachable box magazine or DBM for short. The L46 is the single stack type. The other L series Sako's (L461, L579, etc) have staggered internal magazines with floorplates. The floorplate can drop open for quick unloading. The other type of magazine you will see on bolt action rifles (not Sakos) is the internal "blind" magazine. These have no bottom metal/floorplate & must be unloaded by cycling the action.

How about the thing-a-ma-jigga that holds all the bullets.......whatever you call that thing. Yes. Detachable box magazine, vice stripper "clip"s, and the old Remington m700 ADLs had the blind magazines. My dad hunted for decades with an old ADL in .270 with a Redfield scope. Killed deer by the truckloads with it.

Hello Deergoose,

Any idea how many L469's with pine cones were made? Did Sako ever produce a list of illustrations that were used for their " Deluxe " models? Also could one choose an illustration?, or would you have to have what came? I think the bottom metal illustrations is quite a grey area. What year did Sako start using bottom metal illustrations and what year did they cease producing rifles with bottom metal illustrations? Sorry to overwhelm you, but you seem to be very knowledgeable about this subject.
finally were the L46, L461, L469, L57, L579, and L61 R the only rifles that had b m illustrations? I think as many SCC members should chime in on this subject, so we can get a much clearer picture. For instance were the rifles engraved in house? or were they contracted out to a specialist Company?

Sincerely

Blackjack

I'll need to have a closer look to verify Fella's. Anyone able to send one over ?

To provide certainty for SCC we had better have a second opinion on this; once you have finished having that closer look I am more than happy for you to pass the rifles on to me to provide it deersako :)

Hey Blackjack.

I can't recall ever seeing an L469 in deluxe model. Only the L46. There just are not that many L469 rifles around. I know they made them in sporter and fullstock, and I've got them in both. but the 469 in deluxe is a tough find, if it exists.

Most of the L46 deluxe models that I've seen and own are later in the production run. I think I have one in the 30,000 range, but most of mine are between 43,000 and 46,000 or so. I believe this to be the sweet spot for the Riihimaki deluxe models. There are quite a few different patterns on them. Some with the caliber stamping, some without. Pine cones, acorns, floral designs, etc. Lots of different patterns out there for the L46 and even more for the L57 and L579. I believe there is a link somewhere on here to the pics of all the patterns. I'm not sure where the engravings took place. I believe the special order (fancy) engravings were done in France, and perhaps the standard engravings were done in Finland (??). Good questions. As for when they stopped, I don't think they ever have stopped. I've got some model 75 deluxes, and they all have the engravings. I'm not sure about the new model 85s, as I don't have much interest in them.

hope this helps!

Hey Deergoose,

Good to hear from you. So are we saying that there were no engraved patterns on the L61 R bottom metal. So were there no L61 R Deluxes? Are all the patterns finished in silver? Sorry to be a pain!

B J

oh, no. I must have not been clear. All of the L series deluxes have bottom metal engraving. I just haven't seen an L469 deluxe model. There are several different patterns for the L61R as well including Moose, Bear and of course the "Sakolope".

99% of the rifles are finished in silver, but some of the real early L579s were finished in gold.

hope this helps,
DeerGoose
