• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Sako Super Grade, Custom Shop or Other?

Sako Collectors Club Discussion Forum

Sako 13.jpg Sako 14.jpg Sako 22.jpg Greetings, Attached photos are from an AV rifle from 1986-1987. I cannot pinpoint how it was made and sold. I think it came over to the US from Europe. I would greatly appreciate any of your knowledge about this rifle.
Regards, Bill Hartman

The stock appears to be a Sako Deluxe. If there is a white bearhead inlay in the grip cap & the recoil pad has Sako on it that would confirm. The quick detach scope bases are an aftermarket add on. Floorplate engraving doesn't match any Sako engraving I have seen, but I'm no expert on engraving. My guess is it was done by a engraver at the owners request. If it was shipped from the Sako factory it should have "imported by Stoeger" somewhere on the bottom of the barrel. If there is no import mark it could have been brought back from Europe by an individual, possibly military, when returning to the US. Those claw type QD bases lead me to believe this rifle was "customized" in Europe & brought back to the US by the individual that bought it there, especially since one of the bases is screwed into the barrel. I don't think Sako would build a rifle not utilizing it's machined dovetail scope bases. It is highly unlikely this is a "factory" rifle. Beautiful engraving by the way. You should be pleased to own it.

Paulson's comments reflect my thoughts almost exactly. I would judge the floorplate to be custom engraved, and the claw mounts are almost always of European origin (and not often found on a Sako). It appears to have a late A-V Deluxe stock, which age it to somewhere in the mid-1980's. The custom work, of course, could be later.
