• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

Trigger will not reset!

hello I am in need of help with my L579 bolt. Just acquired this gun and was breaking it down for a total clean. The trigger was quite heavy so a adjusted the pull weight down slightly to a nice crisp break. Put the gun back together. When I open the bolt it opens the firing mechanism but when I close the bolt it closes the rear of the bolt with it. I am stumped on what to do to reset this.
 
Did you clean the trigger mechanism already? My fist thought is that the trigger is full of 30 year old gunk and now that you have adjusted down the trigger pull weight the spring pressure is not enough to reset the trigger. If the trigger is clean then make sure you didn't screw the adjustment screw out too far as this might leave the trigger without any spring pressure!
 
3 causes! Gunked up, too light or no spring pressure on weight of pull adjustment, or too little overtravel (backlash) so trigger can't move back into battery & engage sear. Did you establish where the trigger adjustment screw that you turned was "before" you moved it so you could return it to it's original position?

To All: thanks my gun spent the afternoon with my smith. He set it and it is perfect for me now about 3lb no creep and crisp break. He indicated cleaning was due and had to bring into balance the overtravel and weight adjustments. HH
 
Not sure what your smith meant by "bring into balance" as the weight of pull & overtravel adjustments are independent of each other & the setting of one has no bearing or effect on the other.
 
Good point I should have just indicated adjusted. Appreciate your clarification on the relationships of those adjustments. I was over my head and is why I went to my smith.

Glad you got your trigger set properly to your liking. Lots of people won't admit their limitations & start turning screws randomly, resulting in an unsafe rifle. It can get scary sometimes. Great that you have a smith nearby. Many gun owners are finding them more & more difficult to find. Let us know how your L579 shoots!!!

Well I have spent some time at the range and after various bullets found the one she likes! 165 grain Accubond with IMR4064 pushing it provided by far the best accuracy at 100 yards. Trying to find a balance of oal that would feed in the magazine proved trying although at 2.82 oal it feeds and with very nice groupings although at 125 thousands off the lands.
 
I've found that distance of ogive to rifling varies from barrel to barrel & bullet to bullet. Some of my rifles actually like a much longer "jump" than others. So I always load to what the magazine will allow for a repeater hunting rifle for starters & tweak the OAL from there, going shorter by .005" at a time. I really don't know or care how "far off the lands" it is as long as it gives acceptable accuracy for the purpose it is intended.
 
Careful, adjusting OAL to max the magazine can except and feed can possibly result in zero free-bore in some gun, chamber, caliber, and bullet combinations.
